A method of synthesizing in a high yield the target fluorine compound having a geminal-difluoro structure by subjecting an easily available carbonyl compound to a two-stage reaction. A compound (1) such as ethyl 4-oxocyclohexanecarboxylate is reacted with either a compound represented by the formula X-Z, such as phosphorus pentachloride, or a compound represented by the formula Z2O (wherein Z is a monovalent group which gives a leaving group of the structure -OZ; and X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine). Subsequently, a fluorinating agent which generates a fluorine anion, such as HF, is caused to act on the reaction product to obtain a fluorine compound (2) such as ethyl 4,4-difluorocyclohexanecarboxylate.

A process for producing 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane which involves the first step of reacting in a gas phase 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane with hydrogen fluoride to thereby give 1,1,1-trifluoro-3-chloro-2-propene; and the second step of reacting in a gas phase the above 1,1,1-trifluoro-3-chloro-2-propene with hydrogen fluoride to thereby give 1,1,1,3,3-petafluoropropane; wherein the 1,1,1-trifluoro-3-chloro-2-propene obtained in the first step is fed into the second step after eliminating hydrogen chloride formed as the by-product therefrom. Thus an economical and novel process for producing 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane can be provided in a high yield or at a good selectivity.
