We provide a method for the in situ development of graphene containing silicon carbide (SiC) matrix ceramic composites, and more particularly to the in situ graphene growth within the bulk ceramic through a single-step approach during SiC ceramics densification using an electric current activated/assisted sintering (ECAS) technique. This approach allows processing dense, robust, highly electrical conducting and well dispersed nanocomposites having a percolated graphene network, eliminating the handling of potentially hazardous nanostructures. Graphene/SiC components could be used in technological applications under strong demanding conditions where good electrical, thermal, mechanical and/or tribological properties are required, such as micro and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS), sensors, actuators, heat exchangers, breaks, components for engines, armours, cutting tools, microturbines or microrotors.

According to the invention there is provided an electrothermic composition comprising: at least one carbon component; at least one graphite component, and an optional binder or carrier, wherein the carbon, graphite, and/or their ratio are selected such that that the composition or a material formed from the composition has a thermal coefficient of electrical resistance (TCR) of about zero or is substantially stable over a predefined temperature range. The invention further relates to a product or a material produced or formed by the electrothermic composition. The invention additionally relates to a method of preparing an electrothermic composition comprising the steps of: (i) selecting a predetermined ratio of at least one carbon component and at least one graphite component such that the composition is electrically conductive, electrothermic and will have a TCR of about zero or is substantially stable over a predefined temperature range; and (ii) preparing the composition by mixing said at least one carbon component and said at least one graphite component, optionally in a suitable binder or carrier. An encapsulating composition for a light emitting element, a light emitting diode (LED) and a liquid crystal display device (LCD) are provided. A silicone-cured product included as a main ingredient and a conductivity-providing agent having excellent compatibility and capable of providing superior conductivity can be used to significantly reduce the surface resistivity of the silicone-cured product. Therefore, the encapsulating composition for a light emitting element, the LED and the LCD can be useful in solving the problems regarding attachment of a foreign substance such as dust due to static electricity, and degradation of transparency since the composition has low surface resistivity when used as a semiconductor encapsulation material for an LED, and also in providing a cured product having excellent properties such as light resistance, heat resistance, durability and optical transparency.

Advantageous potential adaptations to different requirements arise in that the zirconium dioxide and the hard material particles are homogenously distributed in the aluminum oxide matrix, and the proportion of zirconium dioxide that is partially or completely stabilized at a proportion of at least 10% by volume is up to 45% by volume, and that of the hard material particles is no greater than 25% by volume.
