    摘要： NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I [R is aralkyl; R is halogen, or a group shown by the formula II (R is alkyl) or cyanomethyl]. EXAMPLE:2-Chloro-3-nitrophenylbenzyl ether. USE:An intermediate for 4-hydroxyindole (an intermediate for a blocking agent for beta-receptor or dye) or 4-oxo-4,5,6,7-tetrahydroindole (a synthetic intermediate for anti-inflammatory agent or germicide). PROCESS:A compound shown by the formula III (X is halogen) is reacted with a compound shown by the formula R X (X is halogen) in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate, to give a compound shown by the formula I where R is halogen. This compound is then reacted with a cyanoacetic alkyl ester in the presence of an alkali metal and an alcohol, to give a compound shown by the formula I where R is a group shown by the formula II, which is heated to give a compound shown by the formula I where R is cyanomethyl.
