    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a new monoallylnaphthol compound useful as a dilluent, a denaturant or a modifier for an epoxy resin curing agent and imparting excellent workability to the agent by lowering the melting point and melt viscosity of the curing agent and capable of providing a cured product free from crack. CONSTITUTION:This compound is a naphthol compound having one ally group expressed by formula I (R is H or OH; when R is H, the position of OH is 2-position, that is, beta-position), e.g. a monoallyl beta-naphthol of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by uniformly mixing, e.g. a naphthol with a base and as necessary, an organic solvent to phenoxidize the naphthol, carrying out allylation reaction whole dropping an allyl halide to the solution system for a long time and subjecting the reactional product to Claisen's rearrangement by high-temperature heating. This epoxy resin composition is obtained from the naphthol compound of formula I, an aldehyde condensation product of a naphthol and an epoxy resin. The composition has high glass transition temperature and excellent heat resistance, moisture resistance, adhesiveness and flexibility and it can prevent occurrence of crack in a package.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare hydroquinone or a quinone derivative useful as a medicine or its intermediate, by reacting a hydroquinone derivative with a halogenoprenyl derivative, and subjecting the reaction product to reductive elimination reaction, and if necessary, protecting group-elimination reaction and oxidation reaction. CONSTITUTION:A hydroquinone derivative of formula I (R is CH3 or OCH3; or two R together form -CH=CH-CH=CH-; Z is protecting group; Y is arylthio, arylsulfinyl, or arylsulfonyl; n is an integer 1-9) is made to react with a prenyl derivative of formula II (X is halogen; m is an integer 1-9) in an anhydrous organic solvent under basic conditions (e.g. n-butyl lithium) at -78-+20 deg.C to obtain the compound of formula III, which is subjected to the reductive elimination reaction of the Y group, protecting group eliminating reaction, oxidation reaction, etc. to afford the compound of formula IV or formula V [R is CH3 or OCH3; or two R together form -CH=CH-CH=CH- or -CH2-CH=CH-CH2- (in this case, the compound is novel)].
