SOLUTION: The projector includes: a lighting device; liquid crystal panels 410R, 410G and 410B; a projection optical system; incident side polarization plates 420R, 420GB and 420B and exit side polarization plates 440R, 440G and 440B which are disposed on the light incident side and the light exit side of the liquid crystal panel respectively and each of which has a polarization layer; liquid crystal panel side light-transmissive substrates 430R, 430G, 430B, 450R, 450G and 450B affixed to the liquid crystal panel side surfaces of the respective polarization plates and made of inorganic material; and opposite side light-transmissive substrates 460R, 460G, 460B, 470R, 470G and 470B affixed to the surfaces of the polarization plates on the side opposite to the liquid crystal panel side surfaces of the respective polarization plates and made of inorganic material.     SOLUTION: A liquid crystal device 1 comprises; an active matrix substrate 2 including a glass substrate 6; a facing substrate 3 including a thinner glass substrate 7 than the glass substrate 6, which is provided facing the active matrix substrate 2; and a liquid crystal layer 4 which is provided between the active matrix substrate 2 and the facing substrate 3. In the glass substrate 6 of the active matrix substrate 2, an etching speed by etching solution is lower than that of a glass substrate 7 of the facing substrate 3.
