摘要: Apparatus for stripping ceramic coatings from the surfaces of articles. The apparatus includes a dedicated pressure vessel, such as an autoclave, which is maintained at an elevated temperature. Caustic solution is preheated to a first elevated temperature before injecting it into the autoclave, and the caustic solution is filtered and cooled after use in the autoclave. The articles are stripped of coating by maintaining the articles at an elevated temperature and pressure for a predetermined time. Various options include the use of analytical equipment to maintain the chemistry of the caustic solution and use of a volatile organic solution to prepressurize the autoclave and shorten cycle time. The autoclave is maintained in a nitrogen chamber to minimize the risks associated with volatile components. The articles are transferred to a separate pressure vessel after completion of the stripping operation so that the autoclave used for stripping can be maintained at an elevated temperature, thereby shortening the cycle time for stripping of additional articles.

摘要: A fluorescent probe is applied to bind to a metal oxide on a substrate and the substrate is exposed to an ultraviolet light to identify the metal oxide. A chemical cleaning or stripping solution is selected by combinatorial high throughput screening (CHTS). In the method, an array of regions is defined on a substrate, a candidate cleaning/stripping solution is deposited onto the regions to effect cleaning/stripping of the regions; a fluorescent probe is applied to bind to a metal oxide on the substrate; the substrate is exposed to an ultraviolet light to identify the metal oxide and a product of the cleaning/stripping is evaluated according to the identified metal oxide. An activated metal substrate composition is provided that comprises a metal substrate with a contaminant metal oxide coating and a fluorescent activator bound to the substrate by reaction with the metal oxide coating.

摘要: A method of removing a coating from the surface of a hole in a metal-based substrate is described. The coating is scored on or near the surface of the hole. The substrate is then treated with a coating-removal solution under conditions suitable for removing the coating without damaging the substrate or any intervening bond layer. The coating is often a zirconia-based thermal barrier coating. In such a case, a caustic solution is used to remove the coating within an autoclave. The substrate can be a component of a turbine engine.

摘要: Maintenance procedures for an article such as a component of a gas turbine engine are analyzed by defining a set of workscopes that may be performed upon the article, gathering maintenance frequency information for each type of subsequent trailing workscope that may be performed after a prior leading workscope, for a sample set of maintenance procedures, and determining a measured sample workscope mix in the form of a set of trailing workscope probabilities as a function of each leading workscope. A projected workscope mix is projected for a set of maintenance procedures from the measured sample workscope mix. From the projected workscope mix, labor, supplies, and monetary estimates for maintenance procedures may be calculated. Alternative maintenance strategies may be readily compared using this approach.
