Abstract:
A hybrid water cannon that can be configured in either a recoil mode or recoilless mode. A first barrel is attached to a breech block. Either a second barrel or breech plug is also attached to the breech block on a side opposite the first barrel. With the breech plug attached, the water cannon is in a recoil mode. With the second barrel attached, the water cannon is in a recoilless mode. A chamber containing a propellant charge is in communication with both the first and second barrels. Upon ignition, the propellant charge pushes a charge of water from both barrels simultaneously and in opposite directions. The discharge from the first barrel is used to disable the target ordnance. The discharge from the second barrel counters the recoil. The propellant charge is ignited using an ignition charge in a port intersecting the chamber at an angle other than 90 degrees.
Abstract:
The present invention is a membrane method and apparatus for separating isotopic water constituents from light water. The method involves providing a supported membrane of an aromatic polyphosphazene and pressurizing the water on one side of the membrane thereby forcing the light water through the supported membrane while isotopic water constituents are retained or vice versa. The apparatus of the present invention includes an aromatic polyphosphazene placed on a porous support and means for pressurizing water through the membrane while certain isotopic water constituents are retained.
Abstract:
A radioluminescent light source comprises a solid mixture of a phosphorescent substance and a tritiated polymer. The solid mixture forms a solid mass having length, width, and thickness dimensions, and is capable of self-support. In one aspect of the invention, the phosphorescent substance comprises solid phosphor particles supported or surrounded within a solid matix by a tritium containing polymer. The tritium containing polymer comprises a polymer backbone which is essentially void of tritium.
Abstract:
Lengthwise coextensively aligned jerky which has fibrous portions aligned generally parallel to the length of the jerky, and a procedure for preparing the lengthwise coextensively aligned jerky by extruding an alignable meat dough through a directional flow bar extruder under conditions such that fibers in the dough are coextensively aligned; further preparing the fiber-aligned dough into cuttable jerky, for example, by freezing, and cutting and/or slicing the cuttable jerky. The resulting lengthwise coextensively aligned jerky typically has a generally rugged, natural-like appearance and feel.
Abstract:
A catheter system and method is provided for overcoming various problems commonly associated with the application of regional anesthesia. Disclosed herein are several embodiments for providing continuous regional anesthesia. In general, the catheter system includes an epidural catheter, an epidural needle, tubing for optional fluid administration, an attached conductive wire (for connection to a nerve stimulator) and a catheter introducer, which is integrated within the proximal hub of the insulated needle. The embodiments may differ in several ways.
Abstract:
A process of abstracting sulfur from H.sub.2 S and generating hydrogen is disclosed comprising dissolving Pd.sub.2 X.sub.2 (.mu.-dppm).sub.2 in a solvent and then introducing H.sub.2 S. The palladium complex abstracts sulfur, forming hydrogen and a (.mu.-S) complex. The (.mu.-S) complex is readily oxidizable to a (.mu.-SO.sub.2) adduct which spontaneously loses SO.sub.2 and regenerates the palladium complex.
Abstract:
The apparatus for separating a solid-liquid mixture has a housing with a metal screw conveyor adapted to rotate relative to the housing on a common longitudinal axis. The conveyor has helically-formed flights about its axis. Replaceable inserts are mounted on the entire circumference of the flanks of the flights with each insert having metal secured to the flights and integral wear-resistant material adapted to function as the working surface. The inserts are formed by first making a metal annular member of the same material as the conveyor flight. The wear-resistant, hard-facing material is then deposited on one radial surface of the metal annular member in a manner to simultaneously form and fuse the wear-resistant, hard-facing material to the annular member. The metal part of the annular member is then machined to proper dimensions and the annular member cut into segmental inserts. The segmental inserts are then mounted on the conveyor flights.
Abstract:
A DC coupled driver is described for modulating a vertical cavity surface emitting laser at high speeds with active termination. High speed and low total power dissipation is achieved by improving the driver immunity to pulse reflections, which can arise due to impedance mismatch between the driver output impedance and the VCSEL impedance. The rise and fall times of the driver may be adjusted for particular applications. The driver may be fabricated using a choice of bipolar, NMOS and PMOS technologies.
Abstract:
A centrifugal fan for ventilated rotating machinery is provided having tapered fan blades to reduce sound pressure levels generated by fan operation over a wide speed range. The tapering of the fan blades keeps the cross-sectional area of each flow channel substantially constant as the air flows radially through the fan, resulting in a less turbulent flow. Each fan blade may include a height profile having a tapered segment in which blade height decreases in proportion to increasing radial distance from the central axis of the fan.
