Abstract:
An ashless additive for lubricating oil compositions, lubricating oil compositions and methods for lubricating that are effective to improve the total base number (TBN) of a lubricant composition. The additive is a reaction product of a compound of the formula: with NH3, an alcohol, an amine, or a hydrocarbyl amine, wherein R1 is selected from H, a hydrocarbyl group, the alcohol or amine contains from 1 to about 24 carbon atoms, and the hydrocarbyl amine has a number average molecular weight ranging from about 100 to about 6000.
Abstract:
An engine lubricant composition, a method for maintaining the soot or sludge handling capability of an engine lubricant while not adversely affecting elastomeric seal material in the engine and a method of operating an engine. The engine lubricant includes a base oil and a dispersant. The dispersant is a reaction product of A) a hydrocarbyl-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, B) a polyamine, C) a dicarboxyl-containing fused aromatic compound, and D) a non-aromatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride.

Abstract:
A method for making a self-dispersing cerium oxide nanoparticles additive for lubricants, a lubricant composition containing the nanoparticles and a method for reducing boundary friction using the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles are made by an improved process of reacting a mixture of organo-cerium salt, fatty acid, and amine in the substantial absence of water and organic solvent at a temperature ranging from about 150° to about 250° C., the improvement comprising reacting the organo-cerium salt, fatty acid and amine in a molar ratio ranging from about 1:1:1 to about 1:2:2 in the reaction mixture to provide the reaction product comprising from about 20 to about 40% by weight of the nanoparticles in a substantially organic medium.

Abstract:
A novel a multi-functional polymer viscosity modifier comprising an additive reaction product obtained by reacting a first monomer comprising an alkylacrylate with a second monomer comprising an olefinic carboxylic acylating agent under conditions effective for free radical polymerization of the first and second monomers to provide a base polymer comprising an acylated alkylacrylate copolymer, and wherein the base polymer optionally may be further reacted with an amine compound to provide a multi-functional polyalkylacrylate copolymer. The base polymer has good thickening efficiency. The multi-functional polyalkylacrylate copolymer dispersant viscosity modifier has good thickening efficiency. The base polymer and the multi-functional polyalkylacrylate copolymer viscosity modifier have good thickening efficiency, low temperature properties, dispersancy, and antioxidancy properties. They also have no precipitation or sedimentation, nor cause or encourage such formations in finished fluids incorporating them.
Abstract:
A dispersant additive composition, a lubricant composition containing the dispersant additive, a transmission containing the dispersant additive, and a method of providing a versatile lubricating fluid. The dispersant includes a reaction product of a hydrocarbyl substituted carboxylic acid or anhydride and an amine. The reaction product has a nitrogen content up to 10,000 ppm by weight, and a boron plus phosphorus to nitrogen ((B+P)/N) weight ratio of from 0:1 to about 0.8:1. The dispersant additive composition is effective to provide an electrical conductivity to a lubricant composition containing the dispersant additive composition and a metal detergent of less than about 1700 pS/m.
Abstract:
A release additive composition including at least one dispersant viscosity index improver present in a form chosen from a semi-solid and a solid is disclosed.
