Each of the planetary gear sets includes a sun gear member, a planet carrier member, and a ring gear member. The torque transmitting devices include clutches and a brake arranged within a transmission housing. Each of the clutches and the brake are located within specific areas defined by the planetary gear sets and the housing walls.

The double transition shift detection module detects whether a double transition shift operation is requested. The first clutch control module controls two of four transitioning clutches of the transmission during an inertia phase of the double transition shift operation. The second clutch control module controls each of the four transitioning clutches of the transmission during a torque phase of the double transition shift operation.

摘要： In a multiple mode continuously variable transmission having a variator, a planetary gear assembly, a low mode brake that grounds a first component of the planetary gear assembly to provide lower operating speeds and a high mode brake that grounds a second component of the planetary gear assembly to provide higher operating speeds, the method of providing a mode upshift comprising the steps of adjusting the ratio of the variator from a low ratio to a high ratio, releasing the low mode brake while simultaneously engaging the high mode brake during a torque phase of the shift and reducing the variator ratio from a high ratio to a low ratio during the inertia phase of the shift, thereby eliminating torque interruption and providing a constant torque output.

摘要： A powertrain has an electric torque converter that includes an electric motor/generator, and a differential gear set having a first member, a second member, and a third member. The powertrain includes a layshaft transmission having a first input member connected to the first member, a second input member connected to the second member, and having a plurality of selectively engageable torque-transmitting mechanisms each of which is selectively engageable to establish a different respective speed ratio through the transmission. At least one controller is provided, and the motor/generator is connected for common rotation with the third member and is controlled by said at least one controller to establish a speed of the third member that permits synchronous engagement and disengagement of the torque-transmitting mechanisms to shift from one of the respective speed ratios to a successive one of the respective speed ratios. A method of controlling the powertrain is also provided.
