    Abstract: An injector includes a nozzle body having a bore and defining a seating, and a fuel flow path along which fuel flows, in use, towards the seating. A needle is slidable through a range of movement within the bore, and engagable with the seating to control fuel flow to an outlet aperture. The needle includes a thrust surface against which fuel at high pressure acts, in use, to lift the needle from its seating. The bore and needle together define a restriction to the flow of fuel along the fuel flow path towards the seating. The restriction is located upstream of the thrust surface, and the restriction is arranged to restrict the rate of flow of fuel towards the seating throughout the range of movement of the needle. In a preferred embodiment, the restriction is arranged such that the rate of fuel flow towards the seating through the restriction varies as the needle separates from the seating.

    Abstract: A fuel injector for use in an internal combustion engine, comprising a supply passage for high pressure fuel and an injection nozzle for receiving high pressure fuel. The injection nozzle includes a valve needle which is engageable with a valve needle seating to control fuel delivery from the injector. A surface associated with the valve needle is exposed to fuel pressure within a control chamber and a first restricted flow path provides communication between the supply passage and the control chamber. A supplementary flow path also provides communication between the supply passage and the control chamber under the control of a control valve, so as to allow high pressure fuel to flow from the supply passage into the control chamber through two flow paths when it is required to terminate an injection of fuel.

    Abstract: A fuel pump comprising a first pumping plunger reciprocable within a first bore and defining, with the first bore, a first pumping chamber.     Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type has a fluid pressure operable valve which can be opened to terminate delivery of fuel to an associated engine. The operation of the valve is controlled by an axially movable shuttle contained in a cylinder. The shuttle is biased toward one end of the cylinder and is displaced away from the one end of the cylinder by fuel supplied by an auxiliary plunger. The shuttle is angularly movable by an actuating mechanism to vary the extent of movement before operation of the valve. The shuttle is biased to the one end of the cylinder by a shuttle return piston in order to reduce the frictional loads on the actuating mechanism. The cylinder containing the return piston is connected to an accumulator chamber.
