A coordinate detecting apparatus for determining the coordinate data of a point on a plane by indicating the point with a touch of a fingertip or other load to the point. The apparatus comprises a transparent resistive film forming the plane (touch panel) and a buffer circuit operating as a voltage follower circuit having substantially infinate input impedance. The buffer amplifier is operatively connected between each selected pair of facing ends of a substantially rectangular region of the resistive film, and equalizes the potentials at the ends. The change of the impedance between one of the ends and the ground is detected in accordance with the touch of the fingertip to the touch panel and is used as an original coordinate data. Further modifications concerning the avoidance of degradation in the detection quality due to fluctuations of the impedance provided by the touch of a fingertip, for example, and the methods to perform 2-dimensional coordinate detection are described.

A touch sensing device employing a new sensing method of the present invention is composed of the sensing portion which senses capacitance change of the touch sensing electrodes forming the touch panel, plurality of capacitance compensating capacitors which are used in common for the sensing electrodes in order to compensate fluctuation of touch sensing electrodes of the touch panel, and the ROM which is storing the data for selecting the capacitance compensating capacitors. The ON-OFF output voltage levels in the touch/non-touch conditions to the touch sensing electrodes can be equalized for each electrode and thereby the touch sensing with high accuracy can be realized by selecting the capacitance compensating capacitor by means of the ROM at the time of retrieving each touch sensing electrode.

A gas discharge panel provides one or more shift channels for discharge spots, said shift channel (s) being composed of 2 or more electrode groups on each of a pair of substrates arranged oppositely across a discharge gap. Electrodes of each group are provided alternately and periodically on each substrate with the electrode patterns on each substrate such as to define said shift channel(s). The electrode layout eliminates the need for crossover areas in the leading out of electrodes and is very useful for realizing high resolution and low cost AC driven self-shift plasma display panels.

A pulse driven self-shift plasma display panel characterized by having meander type shift channels for shifting a discharge spot. Each meander type shift channel is composed of an array of discharge cells defined in the discharge gap at the crossing points of electrodes arranged on parallel substrates, the electrodes on one substrate being oriented generally transversely to those on the other substrate, and barrier structure for determining the meander route being provided. Data in the form of a discharge spot is written in at one end of a shift channel and is shifted by the pulse shift voltages with various phases over the meander route for display at the desired positions. The barrier structure may also be formed using photo-luminescent phosphor material to create desired colored display effects.

Circuitry is employed to scan the electrodes of the panel with sustain voltage pulses at predetermined intervals and determine the coincidence of a selectively applied sustain voltage pulse with light detected by the light pen to indicate the location of the light pen with respect to the panel. A negative scanning method is also disclosed wherein coincidence between a sustain voltage pulse which is selectively not applied and the non-detection of light indicates the location.

An AC memory driving type self-shift type gas discharge panel prevents accidental abnormal discharges caused by deviated abnormal charges. Abnormal charges are significantly accumulated at both ends of a shift channel consisting of a regular arrangement of a write discharge cell and shift discharge cells. Therefore, conductive layers are provided adjacent to at least both ends of the shift channel in order to dissipate the abormal charges.
