Abstract:
A method for decreasing formation of one or more chemiexcitation-induced dark cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (dCPDs) in a cell or DNA molecule in a subject, who has been exposed to UV radiation, is provided. The method comprises administering to the subject an effective amount of a dCPD quencher within 8 hours after the exposure. The dCPD quencher is selected from the group consisting of ellagic acid, Porphyra Umbilicalis Extract (including Porphyra Umbilicalis Extract (and) Sodium Lactate (and) Lecithin), mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and synthetic analogues thereof, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Chrysanthemum Morifolium Leaf Extract, ferulic acid, fused-ring cyanoacrylates, curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract (and) Acacia Catechu Wood Extract, sorbic acid, Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract, Acacia Catechu Extract, dipicolinic acid, squalene, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, beta-carotene and combinations thereof. The dCPD quencher may be administered to the subject in the absence of UV radiation.
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to methods and compositions for providing at least broad spectrum photo protection to skin, which includes protection from at least infrared (IR) radiation and/or visible light. The methods typically entail applying to skin a cosmetic composition comprising: (a) one or more antioxidants selected from the group consisting of baicalin, Venuceane™, ferulic acid, polydatin, silymarin, punica granatum extract, mango leaf extract, soliprin, catechin, hesperetin, astilbin, and DHC V; (b) optionally, one or more solubilizers; and (c) a cosmetically acceptable carrier; wherein the combination of (a), optional (b), and (c) alone, provide at least broad spectrum protection from both infrared (IR) radiation and visible light. UV filters can also optionally be included to provide additional protection from UV light.

Abstract:
Aqueous compositions comprising a) at least one active compound and b) at least one hydrotrope in an amount effective to increase transdermal penetration of the active compound, and methods for increasing bioavailability of active compounds are provided.
Abstract:
Methods for providing broad spectrum photo protection to skin using antioxidants that provide UVA protection to skin are described. The methods include topically applying a cosmetic composition comprising: (a) at least one antioxidant having an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) of at least 10,000 μmol TE/g and a Hydroxyl Radical Absorbance Capacity (HORAC) of at least 2,600 μmol GAE/g; (b) at least one organic UV filter; and (c) a cosmetically acceptable carrier; wherein the cosmetic composition provides an increase in UVAPPD PF of at least 30% relative to an otherwise identical cosmetic composition without the antioxidant(s) of (a). The disclosure also relates to the cosmetic compositions useful in the described methods.
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to compositions and methods for providing full spectrum photo protection to skin, which includes protection from infrared (IR) radiation and/or visible light in addition to protection from UV radiation. The compositions typically include: (a) silymarin; (b) one or more antioxidants selected from the group consisting of ferulic acid, Vitamin C, polydatin, and hesperetin; (c) optionally, one or more solubilizers; and (d) a cosmetically acceptable carrier. The compositions are unique in that the combination of (a), (b), optional (c), and (d) alone, provide at least full spectrum protection from ultraviolet radiation (UV), visible light, and infrared radiation (IR). The composition can additionally, optionally, include one or more UV filters to further enhance protection from UV radiation.
Abstract:
A tetrapeptide having antioxidant activity is provided. The tetrapeptide has a structure comprising, in amino acid sequence from N-terminus to C-terminus: tryptophan-X-tyrosine-X; wherein X is arginine, lysine, histidine or any positively-charged amino acid derivative such as 5-hydroxylysine, ornithine, 2,4-diamino-butyrate and 2,3-diamino-propionate. Each amino acid of the sequence or its Homo-amino acid derivative is independently of the D configuration (D-stereoisomer) or of the L configuration (L-stereoisomer), and the C-terminal comprises one selected from the group consisting of carboxyl (—COOH), and carboxamide (—CONH2). A composition stabilized to oxidation or having antioxidant activity and a method for attenuating effects of free radicals on a keratinous material are also provided.
