    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for updating secondary carrier information for preemptively allocating secondary carriers during handover and an apparatus for carrying out the method. A method in which a terminal performs handover in a broadband access system that supports multiple carriers according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a step in which a target base station receives, from a serving base station, a first message including carrier allocation information on at least one secondary carrier preemptively allocated to the terminal; a step of performing network reentry with the target base station; and judging whether the multi-carrier configuration of the serving base station and the multi-carrier configuration of the target base station are the same, and, if the configurations are different from each other, transmitting, to the target base station, a second message for requesting multi-carrier capability negotiation.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting an expanding request in a wireless communication system is provided. A first cell transmits an expanding request, which includes a cell off state indication which indicates the first cell is going to be turned off, and a cell off timer, to a second cell, receives an expanding request acknowledge as a response to the expanding request from the second cell, and turns off power. Alternatively, a method and apparatus for transmitting a shrinking request in a wireless communication system is provided. The first cell transmits a shrinking request, which includes a cell on state indication which indicates the first cell is going to be turned on, and a cell on timer, to a second cell, receives a shrinking request acknowledge as a response to the shrinking request from the second cell, and turns on power.

    Abstract: A method for managing carriers allocated to a mobile station in a broadband wireless access system supporting multiple carriers, and an apparatus for use in the method are disclosed. A carrier management method for allowing a mobile station to perform carrier management in a broadband wireless access system supporting multiple carriers includes receiving a first message, which includes activation information indicating activation of at least one target carrier from among one or more second carriers allocated through a first carrier, from a base station, and transmitting a second message, which informs the base station of readiness or non-readiness of the at least one target carrier according to a result of the activation, to the base station. The activation information includes information indicating an activation time point, and the transmitting of the second message is performed at a specific time indicated by the activation time point information.
