Abstract: The instant invention concerns a process for fragmenting a polymer chain, comprising an oxidative degradation step wherein the polymer chain is contacted with a reduced form of a metal M and an oxidant such as dioxygen, and wherein the polymer carries covalently bound chemical groups acting as a ligand of said reduced form of the metal M.
The invention also relates to methods making use of this fragmentation process as a first step of a degradation process of the polymer especially useful for avoiding the negative impact of a polymer to the environment. In this connection, the invention relates to the use of polymers carrying chemical groups acting as a ligand for a reduced form of a metal M, as a polymer biodegradable in an environment wherein the reduced form of a metal M is present.

Abstract: Modification of the rheology of a liquid medium, aqueous or nonaqueous, with polymers in the form of specific particles obtained by grinding (micronizing) a porous macrogel, itself prepared by a process comprising a radical polymerization step which comprises reacting in the presence of pore formers monomers containing monomers bearing at least two ethylenic unsaturations, typically in combination with monomers bearing a single ethylenic unsaturation; a polymerization initiator; and optionally a polymerization control agent. These polymer particles keep other particles in suspension within the liquid medium, and also the stabilized suspensions are obtained.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for preparing an aqueous dispersion of water-soluble polymers, which comprises a step (E) of radical polymerization, wherein the following are brought into contact in an aqueous medium (M) in which the synthesized polymer is not soluble: at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is soluble in the aqueous medium (M); at least one source of free radicals; and a reactive stabilizer which comprises: a polymer chain (CP) which is soluble in the medium (M), a group (G) providing the radical polymerization of step (E) with a living and controlled nature, such as, for example, a group carrying a thiocarbonylthio —S(C═S)— group.

Abstract: Provided is a method making it possible to ensure a gradual release of polymer chains within a liquid medium, the method comprising bringing the liquid medium into contact with specific solid objects formed by polymer chains soluble in the medium and carrying hydrophobic side groups ensuring physical crosslinking between the polymer chains within the solid objects. The released chains may in particular be used as inhibitors of the formation of inorganic or organic deposits (scale inhibitors) within a liquid medium, typically in the field of oil extraction.
