A compound for use as a photosensitiser in PDT, in photochemical internalisation in the production of a cancer vaccine or in the diagnosis or detection of medical conditions, the compound having a photosensitising chromophoric system, a sulphonamido functionality and a carboxy functionality. The compounds used in the present invention are photosensitisers in PDT in vivo, and show phototoxic activity in vitro. The compounds are used to treat pre-cancerous conditions, cancer, ophthalmological disease, vascular problems, arteriosclerosis and restenosis and autoimmune diseases, skin diseases and other benign conditions, and for anti-microbial treatments.

The invention relates to plastic bags and sack for use especially in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The bag (2) comprises inner and outer bag sections (4, 14) which are joined at least at an upper portion in a manner which allows them to be separated when required, such as by heat sealing. The outer bag section (14) may be provided with a mouth (10) through which the inner bag section can be withdrawn when required. Alternatively, the outer bag section may be peeled away from the inner bag section. The inner bag section is heat sealed after filling with contents to retain the contents in the inner portion. The heat sealing step also serves to secure the bag sections together as above. The inner bag section is preferably provided with a closeable mouth (132) separate from the end by which it is filled, through which the contents may be dispensed.

Pleochroic fluorescent dyes of the general formula I: ##STR1## in which R is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing not more than 20 carbon atoms and --CH.sub.2 -- between carbon atoms or adjacent to the bicyclo[2.2]octane residue may be replaced by --O-- may be dissolved in liquid crystal host material to form displays which are caused to fluoresce by incident low-energy ultraviolet initially absorbed by the liquid cyrstal host material and then internally transferred to the fluorophor. These dyes have greater stability to ultraviolet than other perylenedicarboxylic diesters while possessing good fluorescent properties and satisfactory order parameters. In formula I, R is preferably a straight or branched alkyl, and/or cycloalkyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, preferably 5 to 7 carbon atoms. The liquid cyrstal host material preferably contains an energy-transfer agent such as a 4-substituted 4"-cyanoterphenyl. The 4-pentyl- and 4-propyl- bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-1-yl perylenedicarboxylates of Formula I and solutions of these dyes in nematic liquid crystal host "E7" (a mixture based on cyanobiphenyls containing 8% 4-pentyl-4"-cyanoterphenyl) are described in examples.

Specially designed polymeric chelating agents are water soluble and have a high chelating efficiency for lanthanide cations and are themselves strongly adsorbed on polymeric substrates, especially paper. The polymeric chelating agents comprise a polymer chain of either general formulae (1) or (2) containing pyridine-N-oxide, quinoline-N-oxide or isoquinoline-N oxide pendent ligand groups A, where m and n are independent integers in the range of from 1 to 10, and the number average molecular weight of the polymers lies in the range from 1×103 to 5×105: In one aspect a polymeric chelate as described is produced in situ in an aqueous ink formulation and is subsequently printed onto a substrate and dried. In another, a substrate is pre-treated with a chelate as described and dried, and then subsequently printed with an aqueous solution of a fluorescent rare earth salt. In both cases, the result is a wet-fast, intensely luminescent print.
