The two-part sizing composition may be advantageously employed to make substantially colorless, densified fiber pellets of a reinforcing fiber material. The densified fiber pellets may be produced by applying the sizing composition to reinforcing fiber strands, chopping the reinforcing fiber strands to form chopped strand segments, applying the binder composition, and palletizing and densifying the coated chopped strand segments to form flowable densified fiber pellets.

A two-part sizing composition that imparts improved resistance to hydrolysis of reinforced composites including a size composition and a binder composition is provided. The size composition may include one or more coupling agents, one or more lubricants, and at least one wetting agent. The binder composition may include a copolymer formed from maleic anhydride and at least one other copolymerizable monomer, at least one crosslinking agent, and a surfactant or mixture of surfactants. In at least one exemplary embodiment, the maleic anhydride copolymer is a maleic anhydride-butadiene copolymer partial ammonium salt. The size composition may be applied to a reinforcing fiber material before the binder size material is applied. The two-part size composition may be applied to a reinforcing fiber material to form a reinforcing fiber product which may then be densified or compacted to form a densified reinforcing fiber product, such as a pellet.

A two-part sizing system for making colorless, densified fiber pellets of a reinforcing fiber material. The densified product may be advantageously produced by first applying a precursor size composition to reinforcing fiber strands, chopping the reinforcing fiber strands into chopped strand segments, applying a binder size, and densifying the chopped strand segments to form densified fiber pellets. The binder size is formulated using a copolymer of maleic anhydride which generates a product free from discoloration. In the process of making the pellets, the sized chopped strands are densified by tumbling in a rotating chamber for a period of time sufficient to increase their density but insufficient to degrade the fibers to a point where composite articles formed from such pellets have lower tensile or impact strengths than comparable composite articles formed from unpelletized strand segments.

The invention relates to an aqueous sizing composition for reinforcing charges, preferably glass fibers, comprising a silane coupling agent, an epoxy film forming polymer comprising 2-8 reactive epoxy groups per chain and compatible with thermoplastic polyester matrix resin selected from PET and PBT, and a hypophosphite in an amount of 5 to 30 w % of the composition, preferably 7 to 25 w %, more preferably 10 to 20 w % and most preferably 12 to 18 w % of the composition. A thermoplastic polyester resin reinforced with glass fibers coated with a sizing composition of the invention shows improved resistance to staining and improved tensile elongation at break. The sizing composition further improves processability of the sized fibres.

A two-part sizing formulation that imparts improved strength of reinforced composites including a size composition and a binder composition is provided. The size composition may include one or more coupling agents and one or more film forming agents. The binder composition includes a blocked isocyanate and a copolymer formed of a maleic anhydride and at least one other monomer copolymerizable therewith. In a preferred embodiment, the binder composition includes an ethylene-maleic acid copolymer formed by the hydrolysis of an ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer. In an alternate embodiment, the size composition includes a coupling agent, a lubricant, and a wetting agent. The size composition may be applied to a reinforcing fiber material before the binder size material is applied. The two-part size composition may be applied to a reinforcing fiber which may then be densified or compacted to form a densified reinforcing fiber product, such as a pellet.
