Abstract: Polyester-epoxide polymer (PEEP) compositions are disclosed. The PEEP compositions comprise a reaction product of a polyepoxide compound (eq. wt. 125 to 250 g/eq.) and a polyester polyol composition. The ratio of epoxy equivalents to hydroxyl equivalents is within the range of 0.8 to 3.5. The PEEP composition has a Tg within the range of −40° C. to 60° C. Elevated temperature-cure and low temperature-cure processes for making the PEEP compositions are also disclosed. In a simple yet innovative approach, a new class of polymers useful for adhesives, coatings, elastomers, and other valuable products is assembled from readily available starting materials without reliance on polyisocyanates or polyamines. The PEEP compositions have increased elongation and lower Tg when compared with traditional epoxy products.

Abstract: Polyether- or polyester-epoxide polymer (PEEP) compositions are disclosed. The compositions comprise reaction products of a polyepoxide compound and a polyol composition. The polyol composition has a melting point within the range of 20° C. to 100° C. and a hydroxyl number less than 35 mg KOH/g. The PEEP composition is a solid-solid phase-change material. As measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at a heating/cooling rate of 10° C./minute, the PEEP composition has a transition temperature within the range of −10° C. to 70° C., a latent heat at the transition temperature within the range of 30 to 200 J/g, and little or no detectable hysteresis or supercooling upon thermal cycling over at least five heating/cooling cycles that encompass the transition temperature. The PEEP compositions should enable formulators to manage thermal energy changes in many practical applications, including automotive, marine or aircraft parts, building materials, appliance insulation, electronics, textiles, garments, and paints or coatings.

Abstract: Detergent compositions comprising one or more surfactants and a polyetheramine composition are disclosed. The polyetheramine composition comprises a compound having a polyglycerol core and an aminoalkyl group or an oxidized aminoalkyl group that is bonded directly or indirectly to each available oxygen of the polyglycerol core. Optionally, oxyalkylene groups link available oxygens of the polyglycerol core to the aminoalkyl or oxidized aminoalkyl groups. Methods for laundering textile articles and other cleaning methods using the detergent compositions are also disclosed. The polyetheramines can use diglycerol, a convenient plant-based starter. Laundry detergents comprising the polyetheramines provide enhanced cold-water cleaning performance for greasy or oily stains compared with similar detergents formulated without the polyetheramines.

Abstract: Agricultural compositions having reduced aquatic toxicity are disclosed. The compositions comprise an agricultural active, a monounsaturated C10-C12 fatty amine ethoxylate, and optionally water. The compositions may further comprise an auxiliary surfactant, a solvent, or both. In certain preferred aspects, the agricultural active is a glyphosate salt. Agricultural compositions comprising a monounsaturated C10-C12 fatty amine ethoxylate have good herbicidal efficacy. Unexpectedly, the monounsaturated C10-C12 fatty amine ethoxylates have reduced aquatic toxicity when compared with their saturated analogs.

Abstract: Methods for making efficient use of steam in a steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process for recovering heavy oils from tar sands and similar petroleum deposits are disclosed. The methods utilize a surfactant to generate steam foam in ways that maximize efficient use of steam. In some aspects, steam foam is used in water layers or gas caps that reside above steam chambers to prevent loss of steam from the steam chamber. The predominant use of relatively dry steam in SAGD processes makes it challenging to find ways to introduce surfactants and generate steam foam. However, decreasing the mobility of the steam by converting at least some of it to foam allows the wellbore and steam chambers above the injection site to be more fully developed, provides for more effective heat transfer to the heavy oil and rock, improves production, and allows recovery of the heavy oil with a minimum amount of steam usage.

Abstract: Polyether-epoxide polymer compositions are disclosed. The compositions comprise a reaction product of a polyepoxide compound and a polyol composition comprising a polyether polyol. The ratio of epoxy equivalents to hydroxyl equivalents is within the range of 0.5:1 to 3:1. The polyether-epoxide composition has a Tg within the range of −40° C. to 60° C. The polyether polyol has a hydroxyl value within the range of 150 to 800 mg KOH/g and an average hydroxyl functionality within the range of 3.5 to 8.0. In some aspects, the polyol composition further comprises a polyester polyol. Low- and elevated-temperature processes catalyzed by bases or Lewis acids for making the polyether-epoxide compositions are also disclosed. In a simple yet innovative approach, a new class of polymers useful for coatings, elastomers, adhesives, sealants, and other valuable products is assembled from readily available starting materials without reliance on polyamines or polyisocyanates.

Abstract: Synergistic surfactant blends are disclosed. In one aspect, the blend comprises an anionic surfactant and a metathesis-based cationic surfactant comprising a quaternized derivative. The quaternized derivative is a quaternized fatty amine, quaternized fatty amidoamine, imidazoline quat, or esteramine quat made from a metathesis-derived C10-C17 monounsaturated acid or its ester derivative. Also disclosed are synergistic surfactant blends comprising a cationic surfactant and a metathesis-based anionic surfactant comprising a sulfonated derivative. The sulfonated derivative is a fatty ester sulfonate, fatty acid sulfonate, sulfoestolide, fatty amide sulfonate, sulfonated fatty ester alkoxylate, imidazoline quat sulfonate, sulfonated amidoamine oxide, or sulfonated amidoamine betaine. The synergistic blends have a negative β value or a reduced interfacial tension (IFT) when compared with an expected IFT value calculated from the individual surfactant components. Blends of the invention also exhibit surprisingly favorable solubility profiles. The surfactant blends are useful for laundry detergents, dish detergents, household or industrial cleaners, personal care products, agricultural products, building materials, oil recovery compositions, emulsion polymers, and other practical applications.

Abstract: Aqueous hard surface cleaner compositions useful for removing permanent ink are disclosed. The compositions comprise 75 to 99 wt. % of water; 0.1 to 5 wt. % of a monoterpene; 0.1 to 5 wt. % of a C10-C17 fatty acid derivative; and 0.1 to 5 wt. % of one or more surfactants. The fatty acid derivative is selected from N,N-dialkyl amides, N,N-dialkyl esteramines, and N,N-dialkyl amidoamines. Preferably, a base such as sodium carbonate or monoethanolamine is also included. The invention includes concentrates comprising the non-aqueous components recited above, as well as other applications for the cleaners and concentrates such as graffiti removers and permanent ink erasers. The combination of a monoterpene and certain fatty acid derivatives, especially fatty N,N-dialkyl amides, unexpectedly enables even dilute aqueous compositions to rapidly decolorize black permanent marker from hard, non-porous surfaces.
