Abstract: An electronic device having a pressure detection system is disclosed. The electronic device may include one or more elements designed to detect pressure exerted on the electronic device. In some embodiments, the electronic device includes a membrane and a detection mechanism, both of which bend in response to a pressure change at the membrane. The membrane may be electrically coupled with a circuit that detects the bending of the membrane and correlates the bending with a pressure change at the membrane. A can may be hermetically sealed with the membrane and surround the circuit to shield the circuit from liquid ingress. In some embodiments, a light transmitter and light receiver are used to detect the bending of the membrane. The light may reflect from the membrane at different angles, based upon a shape of the membrane, and contact the receiving element at different locations, corresponding to pressure change.

Abstract: An electronic device is disclosed. The electronic device may include a sealing element between a protective cover and a housing of the electronic device. The sealing element may provide a seal between the protective cover and the enclosure, as well as monitor or detect a force to the protective cover. Also, one or more support members may surround the sealing element to provide protection against a material (such as liquid) entering an opening between the protective cover and the enclosure. Alternatively, or in combination, the sealing element may include several openings, each of which may include a restraining element to limit movement of the sealing element. Also, a blocking element may be placed at or near an edge of the enclosure to provide additional reinforcement if the sealing element is laterally displaced. The blocking element may include an operational component of the electronic device, such as an antenna.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display, trackpad member, or other structure that can shift laterally with respect to another device structure in response to the application of shear force. Shear force may be applied by the fingers of a user. Shear force sensors may be provided in an electronic device to measure the shear force that is applied. The shear force sensors may be capacitive sensors. A capacitive shear force sensor may have capacitive electrodes. In response to application of shear force, the capacitive electrodes may move with respect to each other. Parallel planar electrodes may shift with respect to each other so that the amount of overlap and therefore capacitance between the electrodes changes or the separation distance between parallel planar electrodes may increase or decrease to produce measureable capacitance changes.

Abstract: A force sensor includes compliant material that is configured to stay within a maximum uncompressed dimension in a first direction when compressed in a second direction. The first direction may be perpendicular to the second direction. The compliant material may stay within the maximum uncompressed dimension when compressed by expanding into one or more gaps defined in the compliant material. Such gaps may be defined on an external surface of the compliant material and/or internal to the compliant material. The gaps may be formed using a variety of different processes during or after formation of the compliant material.

Abstract: The present disclosure discloses a battery pouch that includes a cavity. The battery pouch also includes a first transition between a first side of the battery pouch and a second side of the battery pouch. The first side of the battery pouch includes a first sealed portion having a minimum threshold distance between the cavity and the edge of the battery pouch. More specifically, the first sealed portion is located between a first outer edge of the cavity and a first outer edge of the battery pouch. The battery pouch also includes a second side having a second sealed portion with minimum threshold distance. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

Abstract: An electronic device has a self-healing elastomer applied over one or more external electronic connectors. The self-healing elastomer may obscure the electronic connectors from the user as well as provide environmental protection for the connector and the electronic device. Electronic probes may temporarily penetrate the self-healing elastomer to mate with the electronic connector. After removal of the probes the self-healing elastomer may elastically reform and self-heal.
