    摘要: An array of reflective LCSLM pixels formed on a substrate with a light polarizing layer positioned in overlying relationship to the array. A mounting support includes a waveguide portion having a light input, a light output, and a mirrored surface directing light from the input toward the output, the polarizing layer and the array are mounted on the input. A light source is mounted in the mirrored surface to direct light through the polarizing layer and evenly illuminate the array. Light reflected from the array is directed through the polarizing layer and onto the mirrored surface. A diffuser at the output forms an image plane for the reflected light. Electrical connections are made from the array, through leads in the support and to external contacts.

    摘要: A superluminescent edge emitting device is fabricated to have apparent vertical light emission. The superluminescent device is comprised of a semiconductor supporting structure having a major surface. A light emitting portion is formed above a first portion of the major surface, wherein the light emitting portion is configured in a substantially circular shape to suppress lasing and has sidewalls, and wherein light is emitted from the sidewalls of the light emitting portion. An non-emitting portion is formed above a second portion of the major surface and adjacent to the light emitting portion, wherein the non-emitting portion has sidewalls, and wherein the sidewalls of the light emitting portion and the sidewalls of the non-emitting portion are configured to direct the light emitted from the light emitting portion substantially perpendicular to the major surface.

    摘要: A method of fabricating VCSELs including the steps of epitaxially growing a first mirror stack of a first conductivity type, an active region on the first mirror stack, and a first portion of a second mirror stack of a second conductivity type on the active region. A dielectric layer is then formed on the first portion of the second mirror stack, patterned to define an operating region and a remaining portion of the second mirror stack is epitaxially grown on the first portion to form a complete second mirror stack. Portions of the second mirror stack overlying the dielectric layer are polycrystalline in formation and substantially limit the remaining portion of the second mirror stack to the operating region. The polycrystalline layers can then be removed and electrical contacts formed.

An optical fiber having a core region with a refractive index, a cladding region with a refractive index, and a surface is aligned to the working portion of the photonic device. An optical gel having a refractive index is disposed on the surface of the optical fiber and on the working portion of the photonic device operatively coupling the core region of the optical fiber to the working portion of the photonic device.

    摘要: An optical interface including a base with molded optical waveguides and overmolded electrical conductors, with a keyway formed therein. A keyway mating portion molded around the ends of a plurality of optical fibers to expose the ends of the fibers. With the keyway mating portion engaged in the keyway, openings in a surface of the keyway communicate light to/from the fibers, through the optical waveguides, from/to semiconductor devices on the base. The keyway accurately aligns the mating portion which aligns the ends of the fibers with the openings and, hence, the optical waveguides. Two different waveguide molding techniques are used and diffraction gratings are used to introduce and/or receive light from the ends or mid-points of the waveguides.
