    摘要: A device is disclosed for controlling the respective phased rotation relative to one another of two rotating shafts. The device of the invention finds particular application with respect to automotive engines and sequential operations associated therewith. The rotational displacement, for example, of a cam shaft used to control the opening and closing of engine valves can be controlled with respect to the phasing of rotation of the crankshaft of an engine. The invention finds particular application with regard to a unique, cam actuated valve lifter. In addition, such functions as fuel injection, ignition timing and other sequential operations in an internal combustion engine can be controlled relative, for example, to the rotation crankshaft.

    摘要: A mechanism for actuating valves of an internal combustion engine includes a rotatably supported shaft having a cam surface thereon and a movably supported cam follower slidably engaging the cam surface at a first location. A second cam follower member slidably engages the cam surface at one of a second and a third location thereon when the shaft is respectively rotating in one of a first direction and a direction opposite thereto, the second and third locations being spaced from the first location in opposite directions by equal angular distances. The first and second cam follower members are each operatively coupled to a respective valve of the engine.

    摘要: A valve train for a reciprocating internal combustion engine has a fulcrum means and a rocker arm that define a pair of cooperating outer and inner cylindrical bearing surface contours, respectively, for carrying the reaction forces of rocker arm pivotal movement, the radius of the outer conformation being substantially two times the radius of the inner conformation, with the center of revolution of the outer conformation being located on the operating axis of the valve, the inner conformation of the rocker arm being located such that an extension thereof will intersect the contact point of the rocker arm on the axis of the valve at the free end thereof. Restrainer means are provided to anchor the cooperating cylindrical conformations for substantially rolling action in relation to each other, the restrainer means comprising a retainer pin means extending outward from the inner conformation and slot means in the fulcrum means of a size to receive the retainer means, the recess means defining opposed sloping straight guide wall surfaces extending outward in the direction toward the center of the inner conformation and over which the retainer pin means slides during rocker arm oscillation, the retainer pin means having opposed sides conforming to the arcs of circles, the centers of which lie on the curved plane of the inner conformation arc.

    摘要: A device for disabling a poppet valve in an internal combustion engine. The engine includes a valve actuating drive train having an overhead camshaft, a hydraulic lash adjuster, and a rocker arm which pivots at one end about the lash adjuster. The disabling device is secured to the valve stem and is drivingly interposed between the valve and the other end of the rocker arm. The disabling device includes a cap and drum or first drive means moveable with the rocker arm and relative to the valve stem, first and second springs concentric to the valve stem and respectively apply a biasing force to the first and second drive means and a rotatable latch. The latch is moveable between a valve enabling position and a valve disabling position. The valve is enabled for normal opening and closing when the latch is in the valve enabling position; in this position the latch prevents relative movement between the first and second drive means and both springs bias the valve closed. The valve is disabled when the latch is in the valve disabling position, in this position the latch allows relative movement between the first and second drive means and the first spring biases the first drive means into contact with the rocker arm and the second spring biases the valve closed.

    摘要: A four cycle internal combustion engine having an intake valve conrtrol system adapted to automatically cause the engine to run on less than all of its cylinders during low speed conditions, while under high speed conditions allowing the previously unused cylinders to progressively come into play as greater power requirements are needed. In the illustrated engine, the intake valves for every other cylinder in the firing sequence are controlled solely by biasing springs which have sufficient strength to maintain the valve in a substantially closed condition during low speed operation, but which yield to pressures developed during high speed operation to permit full use of the cylinders as needed. The intake valves for the remaining other cylinders are cam controlled to ensure smooth idling and operation of the engine under low speed and power conditions.
