An offshore platform includes a support structure for supporting a workstation in a body of water at an offshore location. The support structure has a mounting formation and at least one duct is mounted to the mounting formation. The duct is configured to receive an oscillating water column from the body of water wherein oscillations of the oscillating water column generate a fluid flow for driving an energy extraction module.

In an oscillating water column (OWC) assembly power may be generated based on a power reference that is derived from an estimate of the available mechanical power in the air turbine 2 or a measured pressure drop across the turbine. The power reference is used to derive a power control torque reference within a power controller 14. A speed controller 16 uses a comparison of a measured speed of the generator 8 and a maximum speed limit to derive a speed control torque reference. A selector function 22 selects whichever of the power control and speed control torque references is the maximum at any time instant. The selected torque reference is input to an anti stall torque function 24 where it is selectively modified by applying a speed dependent gain that decreases with decreasing turbine speed, preferably so that the main torque reference is zero for a minimum speed limit.

Since a normal turbine will not rotate in one direction with a bidirectional force, this turbine uses two turbines back to back to rectify this force. When the flow comes in one direction the turbine will present one face, when the flow reverses direction the turbine will present the other face. This is so because of this back to back design of this turbine. Each blade of this turbine has one side with a pitch angle but the back side of the blade has 0 degrees pitch that is it is flat. In other words the flat side of each blade will be facing each other and the pitch side of each blade will be facing outward. When seen from the top this back to back blade has a separation between the flat sides of the blades. This is so they will have less resistance with the air when rotating.

A wave energy converter for extracting energy from waves in a body of liquid. The converter comprising an endless spine, the spine including a plurality of spine sections (10). Each of the spine sections (10) houses at least one pneumatic absorber and each pneumatic absorber includes an oscillator that is displaceable cyclically on contact with an incident wave to pump air contained within the pneumatic absorber and thereby extract energy from the wave in the form of pneumatic energy. The spine further includes at least one high pressure duct (31) to direct air pumped from each of the pneumatic absorbers and thereby aggregate and rectify the pneumatic energy extracted via the pneumatic absorbers.

An energy conversion system comprising a support structure upstanding within a volume of water subject to the occurrence of both wave motion and tidal flow, a first apparatus mounted from the support for deriving usable power from the tidal flow, and a second apparatus operationally supported relative to the support structure for deriving usable power from the occurrence of wave motion independently from that derived from tidal flows and power transfer apparatus for facilitating the transfer of such usable powers to a land based location, or for making some alternative use of such power elsewhere.

The invention provides a device for extracting energy from a fluid flow. The device has an air compression chamber and an array of valves, operable to open and close to regulate flow of the fluid through associated valve apertures. The valves are operable to close progressively as the fluid flow is incident thereon, thereby focusing flow of the liquid towards the air compression chamber and compressing air therein. The valves also open on a return flow of liquid from the compression chamber.

A system and method for converting, storing and distributing energy from renewable and non-renewable sources is provided, particularly a system to convert, store and distribute energy in the form of chemical energy in hydrogen (H2). A vertical-axis radial-flow turbine is also provided for the conversion of energy from renewable and non-renewable sources, such as solar energy, wave energy, and wind energy. Further provided herein is a multiple-column flow-control oscillating water column generator for the conversion of energy from wave and wind energy.

An apparatus (2) is disclosed for generating relative motion between the apparatus and the surface of the sea on which the apparatus floats. The apparatus comprises a body (6) adapted to float on the water surface and which defines an annular chamber (28) above the water surface and in communication with said water surface, wherein the chamber is able to expand or contract as the height of the water surface varies as a result of wave motion, to enable movement of the body relative to the water surface.
