The potentiometer comprises a shaft and at least a first and a second terminal, and provides a variable resistance between the first terminal and the second terminal in response to a rotation of the shaft. The variable resistance forms a resistance output value. The processor is configured to detect one of a plurality of set point modes each comprising a different number of non-sequential temperature set points each of which span a range of resistances of the potentiometer, and convert the output resistance of the potentiometer into a temperature setting signal that corresponds with a temperature assigned to the resistance range of the measured resistance output.

In addition to its fire prevention and safety features, the fire prevention module includes a communication module that enables communication between the cooktop appliance and a remote device, such as a smartphone or tablet computer. Using this communication link, the fire prevention module can be used to expand the ability of a user to monitor and/or control operation of the cooktop appliance from a remote location. For example, using a software application on their smartphone, a user may monitor the temperature of a cooking utensil and initiate a particular cooking profile, or be notified when an unsafe cooking condition might be present and that the cooktop unit has been automatically deactivated to remedy the situation.

The oven appliance may include a bake heating element, a broil heating element, and a convection heating assembly including a convection heating element and a fan. The heating elements are operated simultaneously and/or in different combinations in order to rapidly preheat the cooking chamber. For example, the preheat cycle may include alternating between a first heating routine for a first time period and a second heating routine for a second time period. Preheating the cooking chamber in this manner will reduce oven preheat time, ensure proper heat balance, and improve overall cooking performance.
