摘要: An optical filter includes a volume diffraction grating provided within a waveguide. The grating has a thickness T sufficient such that when an optical beam R is incident on the grating from outside the waveguide, wavelengths at or near the Bragg wavelength for the grating are diffracted and coupled into the waveguide, all but the first order interferences being substantially eliminated, while wavelengths away from the Bragg wavelength pass through the waveguide substantially undiffracted. The grating pitch L may be varied to permit tuning of the filter response.

摘要: An optical coupler for a fiber optic communication system, which couples one band of wavelengths out of the fiber while allowing others to be carried further. This allows wavelength division multiplexing of different signals within a single fiber. The preferred embodiment of the invention is comprised of a waveguide having aperiodic corrugations in one wall and a Fabry-Perot type resonator enclosing the waveguide around the corrugations with its axis transverse thereto.

摘要: The invention relates to a waveguide display element comprising a waveguide body and an in-coupling grating (21) arranged to the waveguide body. The in-coupling grating (21) is configured to couple incoming light into the waveguide body into two separate directions (26A, 26B) using opposite diffraction orders (IC:+1, IC:−1) for splitting the field of view of the incoming light. Further the in-coupling grating (21) is configured, typically by setting its period suitably short, such that said coupling takes place only at wavelengths below a threshold wavelength residing in the visible wavelength range. The invention also relates to a waveguide stack (51 A, 51 B, 51 C).

摘要: An optical waveguide that performs both in-coupling and out-coupling using two diffractive optical elements is provided. Each optical element is a diffraction grating and can be applied to the same or different surface of the optical waveguide. The diffraction gratings overlap to form two overlapping regions. The first overlapping region in-couples light into the waveguide and the second overlapping region out-couples light from the optical waveguide. Because the optical waveguide only uses two gratings, and therefore only has two grating vectors, the optical waveguide is easier to manufacture than optical waveguides with a greater number of grating vectors.

摘要: An optoelectronic integrated circuit for coupling light to or from an optical waveguide formed in an optical device layer in a near-normal angle to that layer. In an embodiment, the integrated circuit comprises a semiconductor body including a metal-dielectric stack, an optical device layer, a buried oxide layer and a semiconductor substrate arranged in series between first and second opposite sides of the semiconductor body. At least one optical waveguide is formed in the optical device layer for guiding light in a defined plane in that device layer. Diffractive coupling elements are disposed in the optical device layer to couple light from the waveguide toward the second surface of the semiconductor body at a near-normal angle to the defined plane in the optical device layer. In an embodiment, an optical fiber is positioned against the semiconductor body for receiving the light from the coupling elements.
