An air valve is disclosed suitable for relieving a vacuum in a pipe and preventing the escape of fluid therefrom. The valve includes a body having an inner chamber, an air inlet with inner and outer concentrically spaced valve seats, an opening for cummunicating the chamber witha pipe, and a stationary guide element. A valve element is displaceably mounted in the chamber and is normally urged to a closed position while being shiftable to an open position in response to a vacuum in the pipe. The valve element includes an annular disc of elastomeric material, and a hub mounted for axial movement along the guide element. The hub includes holes communicating the opening with the chamber and with an inner side of the disc when the valve element is in its open and closed positions. Thus, a vacuum at the opening is transmitted through the holes to the inner side of the disc to urge the disc open, and the absence of a vacuum or positive pressure, at the opening causes the disc to close. The hub includes a flange upon which an inner edge of an outer disc side sits usuch that the disc is cantilevered outwardly from the hub. This flange terminates short of the inner valve seat such that inthe valve-closed position, the outer disc side sealingly engages the inner and outer valve seats to prevent escape of fluid from the opening.

A general anesthesia rebreathing system comprised of a disposable portion easily coupled to and decoupled from a permanent portion. The disposable portion includes conventional breathing tubing for coupling a source of fresh gas, as from an anesthesia machine, to a patient and in addition an overflow tube for coupling the patient end of the system to an overflow (popoff) valve, preferably mounted on the machine and constituting part of the permanent portion. The overflow tube entrance is located close to the patient end of the system and in communication with the tubing which conveys expired gas to a reservoir, such as a conventional breathing bag, mounted at the machine end. The arrangement assures that the patient''s initially expired dead space gas is conveyed by the tubing to the reservoir with subsequently expired alveolar gas being exhausted through the overflow tube and pop-off valve.

Separate valve heads each operated by one of the pressure regulator assemblies close against one of the seats, respectively. The central member has an inlet communicating with one of the seats and its respective valve head, and also has an outlet communicating with the other seat and its respective valve head. Pitot tubes establish communication between the outlet and pressure chambers on one side of each diaphragm. The regulator assembly operating the valve head on the downstream side of the orifice piece normally regulates gas pressure at the outlet, but, upon failure of that regulator assembly, the other regulator assembly automatically takes over control.
