Abstract: An improved method of performing object segmentation and classification that reduces the memory required to perform these tasks, while increasing predictive accuracy. The improved method utilizes a capsule network with dynamic routing. Capsule networks allow for the preservation of information about the input by replacing max-pooling layers with convolutional strides and dynamic routing, allowing for the reconstruction of an input image from output capsule vectors. The present invention expands the use of capsule networks to the task of object segmentation and medical image-based cancer diagnosis for the first time in the literature; extends the idea of convolutional capsules with locally-connected routing and propose the concept of deconvolutional capsules; extends the masked reconstruction to reconstruct the positive input class; and proposes a capsule-based pooling operation for diagnosis. The convolutional-deconvolutional capsule network shows strong results for the tasks of object segmentation and classification with substantial decrease in parameter space.

Abstract: A method of water treatment includes flowing water that includes nitrogen and phosphorus compounds through a sorption media composition within at least one chamber of a water treatment system. The composition comprises iron filings comprising at least 5 volume (vol) % of the composition, sand particles comprising at leak 10 vol % of the composition, and clay particles comprising at least 2 vol % of the composition. The iron filings, sand particles, and clay particles are mixed together. During the flowing, the clay particles attract the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, which become absorbed onto a surface of the iron filings and the clay, resulting in a removal of the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds and the generation of reaction products. Nitrogen and phosphorus are then recovered from the reaction products.

Abstract: A tunable comb generator may include a light source to generate an optical signal, an intensity modulator to modulate an intensity of the optical signal from the light source based on a RF drive signal, a frequency-locking loop (FLL) to maintain an optical frequency of the optical signal received from the intensity modulator at a target optical frequency corresponding to a resonance frequency of a periodic optical filter in the FLL, and an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) loop. The OEO loop may include a photodetector to generate the RF drive signal based on the optical signal from the FLL, a tunable phase shifter to select a resonance frequency of the OEO loop corresponding to a harmonic of the resonance frequency of the periodic optical filter, and one or more phase modulators to generate an optical comb signal by modulating a portion of the optical signal from the FLL.

Abstract: An anatomical feature simulation unit is a physical device designed to help simulate an anatomical feature (e.g., a wound) on an object (e.g., a human being or human surrogate such as a medical manikin) for instructing a trainee to learn or practice treatment skills. For the trainee, the simulation looks like a real body part when viewed using an Augmented Reality (AR) system. Responsive to a change in the anatomic state of the object (e.g., bending a knee or raising of an arm) not only the spatial location and orientation of the anatomical feature stays locked on the object in the AR system, but the characteristics of the anatomical feature change based on the physiologic logic of changing said anatomical state (e.g., greater or less blood flow, opening or closing of a wound).

Abstract: A method of selecting, printing, and removing a support removal structure from an additive manufactured object, such that the support removal structure provides structural support for the object during printing. The inclusion of support removal structure within a printed object prevents the object from collapsing during printing. After the printed object is completed and cured during post-processing, the support removal structure is removed from the object to provide an object including accurate physical properties. The support removal structure is elongated and compliant and is specially designed for an individual printed object to provide optimal support during a printing process without tangling during removal.

Abstract: A method of designing and manufacturing a replica composite object based on an original object. The method identifies the structure and physical properties of an original object. Base materials, bodies, and structural templates, each of which includes associated physical properties, are utilized to generate a 3-dimensional model. The 3-dimensional model is discretized and tested to determine if the selected combination of base materials and bodies have physical properties that substantially equal the physical properties of the original object. If the physical properties do not equate, the 3-dimensional model is optimized by adjusting the combination of base materials, bodies, and structural templates. When the difference between the measured physical properties of the 3-dimensional model and the identified physical properties of the original object is less than a tolerance value, the method instructs an additive manufacturing system to generate a replica composite object based on the original object.

Abstract: A QCL may include a substrate, and a sequence of semiconductor epitaxial layers adjacent the substrate and defining an active region, an injector region adjacent the active region, and a waveguide optically coupled to the active region. The active region may include stages, each stage having an upper laser level and a lower laser level defining respective first and second wave functions. The upper laser level may have an upper laser level average coordinate, and the lower laser level may have a lower laser level average coordinate. The upper laser level average coordinate and the lower laser level average coordinate may have spacing of less than 10 nm. Wave functions for all active region energy levels located below the lower laser level may have greater than 10% overlap with the injector region.
