This invention relates to high performance tires designed for high vehicular speeds having thin treads with a maximum thickness of about three centimeters with a running surface which is comprised of a rubber composition which is highly loaded with a combination of reinforcing filler and rubber processing oil. The combination of reinforcing filler is comprised of conductive carbon black and optionally at least one of classical rubber reinforcing carbon black and precipitated silica and their mixtures. This high level of a combination of selective reinforcing filler together with rubber processing oil in the tread rubber is provided to promote a reduction in internal heat generation within the thin tread during high vehicular speeds, particularly for vehicles intended to be used as race cars. The carbon black reinforcement is provided as being comprised of a conductive carbon black, which may optionally be combined with a classical rubber reinforcing carbon black, and which may optionally be combined with an amorphous synthetic silica, namely a precipitated silica, to aid in providing a path for thermal conductivity through the thin, high reinforcing filler and rubber processing oil loaded tire tread to its running surface and thence to the ground in order to therefore promote a reduction in internal heat build up within the tread during high speed operation of the tire.

The invention relates to a tire having a rubber tread of a cap/base configuration composed of a composite of a silica-rich tread cap layer running surface, and an underlying transition zone composite of a carbon black-rich intermediate layer positioned between the tread cap layer and a tread base layer. The combination of intermediate layer and base layer provide a beneficial graduated stiffness between the tread cap layer and the tire carcass. Significantly, the transition zone composite enables a significantly thicker carbon-black rich portion of the tread composite and an associated thinner silica-rich tread cap running surface. In one aspect, the intermediate layer of the transition zone composite can extend to and include a bottom portion of at least two of the grooves of said tread cap layer to support an associated tread lug therebetween.

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a pneumatic tire (400) with improved tire uniformity. The tire has a pair of beads (432a,432b) in bead portions and at least one carcass ply (418) extending between the beads and consisting of reinforcement cords (419) embedded in a rubber matrix (836). The method is characterized by the steps of: a) forming the rubber matrix of the carcass ply or a portion of the bead portions from a matrix material (such as a thermoplastic) that can be rendered plastic and rendered non-plastic, which respectively permits and restricts reorientation of the reinforcement cords, b) rendering the matrix material plastic (such as by heating the thermoplastic) before the tire begins to cure to permit the one or more of the reinforcement cords to be free to reorient themselves, and c) curing the tire in a tire mold (354) while the matrix material remains plastic so that the reinforcement cords remain free to reorient themselves while curing.

According to the invention, a pneumatic tire and method of manufacturing the pneumatic tire having improved tire uniformity characteristics is disclosed. The carcass reinforcement ply has a plurality of reinforcement cords embedded in a matrix material that can be rendered plastic and non-plastic to, respectively, permit and restricts reorientation of the reinforcement cords after the tire has been at least partially vulcanized. The method includes the steps of rendering the matrix material plastic, reorienting one or more reinforcement cords without their being stretched beyond their elastic limits, and then rendering the matrix material non-plastic. The reorientation can occur while the tire is still in the tire mold or when the tire is still hot from the tire mold and at a temperature of at least the deflection temperature by applying a force for reorienting the reinforcement cords.
