Additionally, even when a frictional coefficients for the right and left wheels differ from each other, by appropriately applying an additional contact load to the wheel travelling over the more slippery part of the road surface, the stability of the vehicle can be also substantially increased.

The control unit is provided with a non-steady state detector section that generates a modification signal when it detects a non-steady state of the vehicle in which the steering wheel is turned to an excessive extent. Target motor current signal, which acts to impart the electric steering assist torque corresponding to manual steering torque, is modified by the control unit in accordance with the modification signal generated by the non-steady state detector section. Thus, the tire-to-steering-wheel torque is assisted in a returning direction of the steering wheel, so that the steering wheel is allowed to return to its center position at an increased speed.

The method for forming ceramics according to the invention is characterized in that a polysilazane having a number-average molecular weight of 100 to 50,000 or a modified polysilazane thereof is subjected to a heat treatment, then exposed to an atmosphere containing water vapor or immersed in distilled water containing a catalyst, or both, or is brought into contact with Pd.sup.2+ ions and water, the polysilazane having a skeleton comprising the unit represented by the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 each independently represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group, a group other than the above and having a carbon atom directly attached to the silicon atom, an alkylsilyl group, an alkylamino group and an alkoxy group; with the proviso that at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is a hydrogen atom. A follower pulley, to which a steering torque from a steering wheel is transmitted through Bowden wires, is spline-coupled to an outer periphery of the output shaft of the motor. When the output shaft of the motor is rotated by the steering torque of the steering wheel transmitted to the follower pulley or by the output torque from the motor, the steering rod is moved laterally by the ball screw mechanism to turn the steerable wheels of a vehicle.

In response to rotation of position control members of the friction clutch mechanisms, one of the friction clutch mechanisms sets is disengaged whereupon a force or pressure exerted from the locking members of the other friction clutch mechanism sets to the output member forces the output member to move in the radial direction relative to the input member. With this movement of the output member, a frictional engagement force acting between the locking members and the input and output members is reduced. Thus, the friction clutch mechanisms can be readily disengaged by a force which is much smaller than the force required to disengage all the friction clutch mechanisms at one time.

The steering apparatus includes an attenuation device in the form of a phase delay circuit or an active low-pass filter, which is provided in a feedback loop connecting a motor current detector and a control section of a control unit constituting the vehicle steering system. By the attenuation device attenuating relatively high frequency components of motor current detected by the motor current detector, there is achieved a high-performance electric power steering apparatus which is capable of reducing noise in the feedback loop, without affecting the motor current, to a sufficient degree to highly improve a response to a driver's steering operation.

An electrically operated power steering apparatus basically has a steering torque sensor, a steering rotational speed sensor, and preferably a vehicle sensor. A controller outputs a motor control signal based on a steering torque, a steering rotational speed, and a vehicle speed which are detected by the steering torque sensor, the steering rotational speed sensor, and the vehicle sensor, respectively. The motor control signal is applied to control a motor driver to output a motor drive signal which energizes an electric motor to produce an assistive steering force or a braking force. The electrically operated power steering apparatus is effective to improve steering and returning characteristics of a steering system, and give the steering system a stable steering capability.
