According to the method, a device link file is generated, wherein the device link file identifies home devices that are currently connected to the home network. A device link page is created, wherein the device link page contains a device button that is associated with each home device that is identified in the device link file. A hyper-text link is associated with each device button, wherein the hyper-text link provides a link to an HTML page that is contained on the home device that is associated with the device button, and the device link page is displayed on a browser based home device.

The present invention provides a system and method for regulating the viewing of a device among multiple users. Briefly described, one embodiment comprises assigning at least one programming time period block to at least one user, each of the programming time period blocks defining a unique period of time that the user is uniquely authorized to select programming on the device, receiving an identity signal from the user, determining if the identity signal corresponds to an identity of an authorized user who is currently authorized to select programming on the device, enabling selection of programming by the user when the identity signal corresponds to the identity of the authorized user, and disabling selection of programming by the user when the identity signal does not correspond to the identity of the authorized user.

A video source device generates a session key for each transmission session wherein a multi-frame video content is to be transmitted to a video sink device. The video source device uses the session key to generate a successive number of frame keys. The frame keys in turn are used to generate corresponding pseudo random bit sequences for ciphering the corresponding frames to protect the video content from unauthorized copying during transmission. The video sink device practices a complementary approach to decipher the received video content. In one embodiment, both devices are each provided with an integrated block/stream cipher to practice the transmission protection method.

Improved techniques for synchronization of media contents stored on a media player with media contents stored on a host computer are disclosed. According to one aspect, synchronization can be automatically initiated and performed upon connection of a data link between the media player and the host computer. According to another aspect, synchronization is able to be achieved with a reduced amount of data transfer between the host computer and the media device.

A method and system for commanding and controlling diverse home devices is provided. A first home device capable of displaying user interface data is connected to a home network. A second home device stores user interface data that defines a user interface for commanding and controlling the second home device, also connected to the home network. The first device receives the user interface data from the second device over the network. The first device then displays the user interface as defined by the data. The user interacts with the user interface displayed on the first device by a control device. User input is accepted from the user responsive to the interaction. Control and command information is sent from the first home device to the second home device in order to control the second device according to the user input. Since the user interface can be displayed from any device, a single control device may control a plurality of different devices without requiring any change in the mode of operation of the control device.

The charging system includes a charger including a coupling connector for coupling to a rechargeable electronic device, wherein the coupling connector includes charging circuitry for providing an electrical charge to the rechargeable electronic device and a communication port for transferring data to the rechargeable electronic device. The charging system further includes a network connection for receiving the data from a remote source and selectably transferring the data upon receipt to at least one of the communication port and a storage means of the charger. In one embodiment the rechargeable electronic device is a remote control device for controlling a television, and the data is a television channel guide.

An entertainment system includes a digital television connected to a number of audio/video input devices. The television and at least two of the input devices support analog legacy communication schemes. The television is adapted to uniquely identify the analog output channels from each of the input devices. Uniquely identifying the analog output channels from each input device enables the television to automatically select the correct device output from among the numerous possibilities. This automation relieves the user of having to manually select the correct analog channel.

An architecture for convergence systems is disclosed. The architecture includes a hardware component providing a convergence environment. A channel map services component includes a listing of receivers of programming associated with the convergence environment and a listing of channels associated with the receivers. A content services component includes a listing of programming events associated with the channels of the receivers. The content services component also includes a listing of the times of programming events. A TV services component uses the channel map services component, and the content services component to control the hardware component of the convergence environment to manage the hardware component of the convergence environment. The TV services component controls the audio/video multiplexer to reroute programing signals from receivers to outputs of the audio/video multiplexer and various devices attached to the outputs, at various times. When a conflict resolution requires time-shifting of one of the programming events, the TV services component may inform the user and seek input regarding the time-shift solution. Conflicts are resolved with minimal user intervention.
