摘要: A container formed with a plurality of faces. An energy absorbing material is within the container. A plate is located within the container. An elongated member having a proximate end and a distal end is located with the proximate end of the elongated member proximate to the plate. A first bumper is integral with the distal end of the elongated member. A first engagement mechanism is proximate to the plate, wherein the engagement mechanism has a first position that fixes the plate to the elongated member and a second position that uncouples the plate from the elongated member. A first sensor is located to quantify a collision force on said first bumper. The sensor communicates with the first engagement mechanism whereby the position of the engagement mechanism is dependent on a quantity of the collision force sensed.

摘要: A bumper absorber for protecting pedestrians (20) is formed into a W-shaped cross-sectional configuration, as taken along a direction which is orthogonal to a longitudinal direction of the bumper absorber. The W-shaped cross sectional configuration has portions in which a front notch portion (22), an upper rear notch portion (24), and a lower rear notch portion (26) overlap with one another in a vertical direction of a vehicle. Ribs (30) are formed respectively at the upper rear notch portion (24) and the lower rear notch portion (26), and a triangular notch (32) is formed from a vehicle rear side at each of the rib (30). Further, the ribs 30 are formed at the upper rear notch portion (24) and the lower rear notch portion (26) so as to be separated from each other at predetermined intervals in a longitudinal direction of the bumper absorber, namely, in a transverse direction of the vehicle. With this structure, a rise in impact load acting on a pedestrian who is hit by a bumper can be controlled.

摘要: To prevent a shock absorbing material mounted on a vehicle body from collapsing or being scattered under the shock at the time of a collision. The four sides of a shock absorbing material formed of a foamed material are surrounded by a bellows form cover consisting of four corrugated plates inclusive of corrugated plates. Under an external force due to collision, the bellows is folded and contracted easily, but is difficult to be deformed in the width directions. Therefore, the shock absorbing material receives the energy upon collision in its initial shape, so that the energy is absorbed substantially by the compression of the shock absorbing material. Accordingly, it suffices to design a set load for the shock absorbing material by taking into account only the shock absorbing material, so that it is easy to design the shape, material and the like of the shock absorbing material.

摘要: An improved energy management device comprises a substrate body and at least one permeable insert sheet disposed in the substrate body. The shape and orientation of the sheet may be varied. In the various embodiments, the insert sheet has a wall substantially transverse to the energy absorbing surface of the energy management device. The substrate body and the at least one energy absorbing insert sheet are engaged with respect to one another. This may be achieved by having at least a portion of the substrate body disposed in the permeable portion of the insert sheet thereby "locking" in place the insert sheet. It has been discovered that such a combination of a substrate body and an insert sheet surprisingly and unexpected results in improved energy management properties when compared to the independent energy management properties of the substrate body and the insert sheet. The energy management device is useful, for example, in the construction of a vehicular bumper.

摘要: A crash impact attenuator designed to be mounted on a service truck or other vehicle including a perimeter band, preferably with an elongated profile having generally arcuate ends spaced from each other and interconnected by opposing links of side walls. At substantially the center of the side walls, a loop of cable or similar high tension material is provided to limit any separation of the side walls from each other. Considering one of the two arcuate ends of the perimeter band as constituting the front of the crash impact attenuator and the other of the two arcuate ends of the perimeter band as constituting the back of the crash impact attenuator, the front of the attenuator is bolted or otherwise connected to the service vehicle to be protected it from impact and the rear of the impact attenuator cantilevers out from the rear of the service vehicle and spaced above the surface over which the service vehicle is traveling. The crash impact attenuator is held in the cantilever position by a cable extending from the rear of the crash impact attenuator to a boom or other standard provided on the rear of the service vehicle. At the front of the crash impact attenuator, two side-by-side cylinders are mounted inside the perimeter band. The two front cylinders are of a size that they are spaced from the cable loop. The rear of the crash impact attenuator has a third cylinder mounted inside the perimeter band and spaced from the cable loop. A grabber mechanism is mounted at the rear of the crash impact attenuator to direct errant vehicles into the attenuator in order to prevent them from rebounding off the system back into the flow of traffic. The entire system is open, devoid of any filler.
