Abstract:
An oral care composition and method are described in which the composition includes a film or a plurality of film fragments entrained in a carrier. The film or plurality of film fragments comprises a zinc compound and the carrier comprises a polysaccharide and a maleic anhydride copolymer. The composition and methods provide benefits including one or more of increased consumer acceptability, improved solubility of zinc thus permitting the use of lower amounts of zinc compounds and reducing the adverse astringency associated with zinc, decreased adverse reactions brought about by the presence of zinc ions, enhanced aesthetics, improved stability for active or other functional materials, and controlled delivery of active materials such as zinc.
Abstract:
The invention includes methods of cleaning an oral surface, maintaining oral health and/or increasing oral health. Such methods encompass contacting an oral surface with a primary oral care composition at least once daily, contacting the oral surface with a periodic oral care maintenance composition at least once monthly, wherein the periodic oral care maintenance composition comprises a basic amino acid, in free or salt form and optionally contacting the oral surface with a periodic oral care cleaning composition at least once monthly. The periodic oral care cleaning compositions suitable for use in the method comprise an abrasive system.
Abstract:
The invention includes an oral care composition that reduces and/or eliminates the perception of tooth sensitivity. The composition includes an adherent material and particles having an average particle size of about 8 microns or less. The particles are present in the composition in an amount of about 5% by weight. Also included within the scope of the invention are related methods, such as methods of occluding a dentin tubule.
Abstract:
A dental tray with a hydrophobic tooth whitening formulation where the tooth whitening formulation is substantially non-water soluble, and a method of using this dental tray to whiten the teeth. The tooth whitening formulation is primarily comprised of a hydrophobic polymer and a peroxide or a peroxide yielding compound. Preferably the hydrophobic polymer is the condensation product of a silicone resin and an organosiloxane. The dental tray is formed to encompass the front and the rear surfaces of the teeth. The dental tray is comprised of a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer. The teeth whitening formulation is placed into the dental tray and the tray placed against the teeth to be whitened. This is for a sufficient period of time to at least partially whiten teeth. This can be a period of time from about 0.5 hour to 2 hours or more. The substantially non-aqueous tooth whitening formulation is effective over a longer period of time since it is not significantly diluted or removed from the dental tray during the treatment time.
Abstract:
The invention includes a dentifrice composition that comprises a zinc ion source, a polyphosphate ion source, an anethole, and a silica. The silica has a mean particle size of about 5 to about 12 microns, an Einlehner hardness of about 1 to about 20, and an oil absorption of about 40 to less than about 100 cc/100 g. The composition contains zinc ions and polyphosphate ions in a weight ratio of about 0.1:1 to about 10:1 and has a RDA value of about 100 to about 200 and a PCR value of about 75 to about 110. Related methods are also included.
Abstract:
The invention includes methods of cleaning an oral surface, maintaining oral health and/or increasing oral health. Such methods encompass contacting an oral surface with a primary oral care composition at least once daily, and contacting the oral surface with a periodic oral care composition at least once within a period of about 42 days. The periodic oral care compositions suitable for use in the method comprise a first abrasive having an Einlehner hardness of greater than about 5 mg loss per 100,000 revolutions and a second abrasive having an Einlehner hardness of less than about 5 mg loss per 100,000 revolutions. In the periodic oral care compositions, the ratio of the first abrasive to the second abrasive is about 1:1.6 to about 1.6:1. The periodic oral care compositions are characterized by a pellicle cleaning ratio of greater than about 100 and a radioactive dentin abrasion of less than about 200. Additionally or alternatively, the methods may include those where the second abrasive comprises silica and has an oil of absorption of greater than about 90 cm3/100 g and/or an Einlehner hardness of less than about 5 mg loss per 100,000 revolutions. The ratio of the first abrasive to the second abrasive may be about 1:1.6 to about 1.6:1. The total amount of the first and second abrasives present in the oral composition may be greater than about 25% by weight of the composition and/or the oral composition has a pellicle cleaning ratio of greater than about 100 and a radioactive dentin abrasion of less than about 200.
Abstract:
A dual phase whitening oral care composition comprising a first phase comprising a bound peroxide in a substantially anhydrous carrier and a second phase comprising an abrasive and a tartar control system in an orally acceptably carrier. Methods of whitening a tooth surface are also provided.
Abstract:
Compositions for altering the color of teeth, including tooth-coating compositions comprising a colorant and an acrylate polymer. Colorants among those useful herein include whiteness-imparting particulate materials, such as hydroxyapatite.
Abstract:
In various embodiments, the present invention provides a tooth whitening composition comprising a peroxide composite and an orally acceptable carrier. The peroxide composite comprises a peroxide compound and a porous cross-linked polymer, preferably in the form of a microporous particulate. The peroxide compound can be sorbed onto the porous crosslinked polymer. The porous cross-linked polymer may comprise a polymerized polyunsaturated monomer selected from polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, polyitaconates, and mixtures thereof. The carrier can be non-aqueous, and can comprise a film forming material. Methods are also provided for whitening a tooth surface with the tooth whitening compositions.
