    Abstract: Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, receiving, by a first waveguide system and via a coupler between the first waveguide system and a second waveguide system, a first electromagnetic wave transmitted by the second waveguide system, where the first waveguide system is operably coupled with a first span of a first transmission medium, the second waveguide system is operably coupled with a second span of a second transmission medium, the first transmission medium is supported by a first portion of a utility structure, and the second transmission medium is supported by a second portion of the utility structure, and transmitting, by the first waveguide system, a second electromagnetic wave based on the first electromagnetic wave, where the first and second electromagnetic waves respectively propagate along the coupler and the first span of the first transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path.
