Abstract:
A urethane composition useful in a variety of applications such as, for example, as a direct-to-metal coating, i.e. a coating composition that can be applied directly to the surface of a metal substrate without a primer or pretreatment is described. The coating composition preferably includes a polyol that is the reaction product of a resin of general formula (I) with an acid or a diol respectively, with the reaction being carried out in the presence of a catalyst. The coating composition also includes an isocyanate-functional compound as a crosslinker. The coating composition forms a corrosion-resistant film when applied directly to the substrate surface without a pretreatment or primer.
Abstract:
The present invention provides novel packaging articles, e.g., food and beverage cans, having a novel coating composition applied to at least a portion of a surface thereon. In preferred embodiments, the coating composition includes at least a film-forming amount of a copolyester resin having a backbone that includes one or more soft segments and a plurality of hard segments. The copolyester resin preferably has a glass transition temperature from about from about 10° C. to about 50° C. The present invention also provides a method for making coated articles.

Abstract:
Methods, formulations, and systems for coating metal substrates are provided. The methods and systems include application of TGIC-based powder coatings that demonstrate excellent corrosion resistance when exposed to outdoor conditions, as demonstrated by cyclic corrosion testing.
Abstract:
An oxygen-scavenging composition is provided that includes an oxygen-scavenging polymer and a catalyst. The oxygen-scavenging polymer, which in preferred embodiments is suitable for use in packaging articles, includes a base polymer having a backbone, and an unsaturated side chain attached to the backbone. In one embodiment, the side chain comprises an unsaturated fatty-acid.
Abstract:
A polyester-carbamate polymer and coating compositions containing the polymer are provided. The polyester-carbamate polymer preferably includes a polyester-carbamate backbone and one or more blocked isocyanate groups. A coating composition is provided that preferably includes the polyester-carbamate polymer and a thermoplastic dispersion. In a preferred embodiment, the coating composition is an organosol.
Abstract:
A coated fiber cement article in the form of an unattached fiber cement board substrate having a first major surface at least a portion of which is covered with a crush resistant final topcoat composition comprising a multistage latex polymer, and a method for making a crush resistant coated fiber cement article by coating a fiber cement board substrate with such a composition and stacking the coated boards.
Abstract:
Titanium dioxide may be more efficiently used in a coating composition containing a composite pigment particle-forming polymer if during composite formation, the polymer is initially present in a low concentration and the titanium dioxide particles and newly-formed composite particles are dispersed in a waterborne emulsion polymer that does not form such a composite. A pigment grind dispersion of titanium dioxide pigment-polymer composite particles may be made by mixing titanium dioxide particles with the waterborne emulsion polymer. The composite-forming polymer is then added to the waterborne emulsion polymer, or is added independently and concurrently with the titanium dioxide particles. The resulting titanium dioxide pigment-polymer composite particles provide improved coating composition opacity compared to a coating composition that does not contain such composite particles. The coating compositions can contain reduced titanium dioxide amounts and less than a saturation level of the composite-forming polymer.
Abstract:
A coating composition including a functionalized resin selected from at least one of polyurethanes, epoxies, polyamides, chlorinated polyolefins, acrylics, polyesters, or mixtures or copolymers thereof, wherein the resins comprises at least one of (meth)acryl or acetoacetyl functionality; a (meth)acryl functional compound; and a functionalized silicone compound.
Abstract:
A copolymer is made by feeding one or more added olefinic monomers into a reaction vessel containing a non-homopolymerizable olefinic monomer heated to a temperature of at least about 100° C. The process may be performed in a batch or continuous fashion, may use an unpressurized reactor, may be performed without added solvent, and may form a copolymer whose number average molecular weight is less than about 4,000 amu and whose polydispersity is less than about 3.
