This invention provides an inorganic coating composition comprising (a) about 100 parts by weight (based on solids) of a binder component prepared by thermally dissolving about 10 to about 40 parts by weight of fine particles of silica in about 100 parts by weight (based on solids) of potassium silicate and (b) about 15 to about 100 parts by weight of pearl luster pigment.

Stable vermiculite dispersions which are substantially free of settling and a method of preparing same are provided. The dispersion are obtained by treating the vermiculite platelets of which the dispersion is comprised with citrate anion. The citrate anion functions as a swelling agent for the vermiculite and enhances the rate and extent of swelling in an aqueous medium. The swollen vermiculite is delaminated by shearing to provide the inventive dispersions, which comprise a suspension of the delaminated platelets and citrate anion.

A heat-resistant, highly expansible sheet material for supporting a catalyst carrier containing unexpanded vermiculite, in which the cations contained between the layers of the vermiculite are at least partly exchanged by ammonium cations, is provided. A process for the preparation of the sheet material, which involves blending an unexpanded vermiculite which has been preliminarily immersed in an aqueous solution containing alkali metal ions, inorganic fiber, an organic binder, and an inorganic binder, whereto a slurry solution of beaten natural organic fiber is added, and forming a sheet material from the mixture, is described.

This invention relates to a method for forming a product from a naturally occurring phyllosilicate, the method comprising the steps of:(a) exposing the phyllosilicate to a source of exchangeable cations to effect a change in the chemical makeup of the phyllosilicate interlayer by ion transfer;(b) exposing the ion-exchanged phyllosilicate to an expanding agent selected from the group consisting of a primary aminocarboxy acid, lysine orotate, and glycylglycine to expand the cell spacing and cause gel formation;(c) flocculating the gel;(d) forming a gel-floc interface; and(e) withdrawing the flocculated gel from that interface.

Disclosed are flocced mineral materials which may be utilized to prepare high temperature resistant, water resistant articles. These materials are prepared by utilizing, as a starting material, a gellable layered swelled silicate that has an average charge per structural unit that ranges from about -0.5 to -1 and which contains interstitial cations which promote swelling with a source of at least one species of an exchange cation that is derived from guanidine or compounds closely related thereto.

A cementitious mixture including water-repellent vermiculite, polypropylene fibers and cement. A preferred embodiment utilizes: asphalt-coated, expanded vermiculite; collated, fibrillated polypropylene fibers; and non-shrinking Portland cement. Test data indicates a greatly increased compressive strength compared to previously known vermiculite insulating concretes. A prefabricated building panel utilizing the mixture of the present invention, and a method of manufacture thereof, are also disclosed. Calculated R values indicate good thermal insulating characteristics.

This invention is directed to the preparation of an organic-inorganic composite body demonstrating hydrophobic behavior containing crystals of an organic polycation-exchanged lithium and/or sodium water-swelling mica, the organic polycation being selected from the group of aminosilanes and organic chrome complexes. The process of preparing such products contemplates the steps of:(a) forming a glass-ceramic body containing crystals selected from the group of fluorhectorite, hydroxyl hectorite, boron fluorphlogopite, hydroxyl boron phlogopite, and solid solutions among those and between those and other structurally-compatible species selected from the group of talc, fluortalc, polylithionite, fluorpolylithionite, phlogopite, and fluorphlogopite;(b) contacting said body with a polar liquid for a time sufficient to cause swelling and disintegration thereof accompanied with the formation of a gel; and(c) contacting said gel with a source of organic polycations selected from the group of aminosilanes and chrome complexes to cause an ion exchange reaction to occur between said polycations and the Li.sup.+ and/or Na.sup.+ ions from the interlayer of said crystals, whereby essentially all of said Li.sup.+ and/or Na.sup.+ ions are replaced with said organic polycations.Paper, board, film, fiber, and coating can be formed from the exchanged gel, and dried powders thereof can be hot pressed to yield a body consisting of a cross-linked organic polycation-mica derivative.
