    Abstract: An in-line apparatus for separating oversize particles from a pressurized fluid slurry which comprises:a rigid, hollow body member capable of withstanding the pressure of the fluid slurry, the body member having a valved slurry inlet port and a slurry outlet port, each port adapted to mate with slurry conduit means;a washer access port opposite from and in axial alignment with the slurry outlet port;a hollow, open-ended screen assembly fixedly mounted within the body member between and in axial alignment with the slurry outlet port and the washer access port;a valved oversize particle discharge port at the lowermost end of the body member adapted to mate with oversize particle conduit means; andretractable backwasher means externally mounted on the body member in axial alignment with the washer access port and the screen assembly, where the backwasher means comprises a fluid discharging spray head adapted to pass axially through the interior of the screen assembly, whereby a pressurized backwashing fluid is directed against the entire interior surface of the screen assembly to dislodge and wash out accumulated oversize particles, and then retract so that the spray head is withdrawn through the washer access port.

    Abstract: A fluid filter for indicating by color the presence of an excessive amount of a given substance. A housing is formed at opposed end regions with a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, and this housing has in its interior a micro-fibre cylinder which is hollow and which is spaced from the side wall of the housing between the fluid inlet and fluid outlet to define a passage with the housing. The fluid which enters through the inlet must first flow to the interior of the cylinder before reaching the passage between the latter and the housing. Packed within the fibre cylinder between the interior thereof and the inlet is an adsorbent medium having distributed therein dye particles soluble in the substance which is detected so that when the latter substance is present in an excessive amount in the fluid the dye particles dissolve to release a coloring medium which contrasts with the color of the micro-fibre cylinder so as to discolor the latter. The housing is constructed in such a way that it is possible to see the cylinder through the wall of the housing, and in this way an indication will be given of the presence of the undesirable substance in the fluid.

    Abstract: For use with an adjustable flow faucet including a delivery port and a manually adjustable control valve, a portable disposable water filter comprising a housing having an inlet end portion and an opposite discharge end portion, and a filtering medium disposed between the end portions and through which the water must pass in movement from the inlet end portion to the discharge end portion. The inlet end portion is formed to provide a space for receiving water to be filtered, and this space is connected to the faucet delivery port. A device for visually indicating when the water pressure in the said space is at a predetermined level corresponding to the desired flow rate through the filtering medium is provided. This visual indicating device preferably is proportioned and designed to exhaust excessive unfiltered water away from the space to reduce the water pressure in the space to the desired level and/or to maintain it at or below that level. In one embdiment of the invention, the space above the filtering medium is an open container into which the water to be filtered may be deposited. In another embodiment, the water is deposited in a collapsible container, and the container is collapsed to move the water through the filtering medium.
