Abstract: Activation modules for selectively sealing entrances to inner barrels of coring tools may include an activator body sized and configured to obstruct the entrance to the inner barrel when the activation module is in a first state and to release the entrance to the inner barrel when the activation module is in a second state. A sealing element may be located at a periphery of the activator body, and may be configured to form a seal between at least a portion of an interior of the inner barrel and at least a portion of an exterior of the inner barrel when the activation module is in the first state and to disengage the seal when the activation module is in the second state.

Abstract: A well treatment fluid includes an aqueous-based fluid, a crosslinked CMHEC polymer, and a crosslinker. The CMHEC polymer exhibits a DS of 0.2 to 0.6 and a MS of 2.0 to 2.5. The well treatment fluid exhibits a viscosity of at least about 100 cP. A well treatment method includes crosslinking a CMHEC polymer in an aqueous-based fluid at a pH of at least about 6. The crosslinking increases a viscosity of the well treatment fluid to at least about 100 cP. A well is treated with the well treatment fluid at a temperature of at least about 200° F. Another well treatment method includes forming a well treatment fluid from produced water that has a TDS content of at least about 150,000 ppm. The crosslinking increases a viscosity of the well treatment fluid to at least about 100 cP.

Abstract: A local position indicating device for a subsea isolation valve that has no other visual signals of its position integrates to the hydraulic actuation system for the isolation valve. Three way valves, connected to an operating control line and a force closed balance line leading to opposed ends of an operating piston, are located by the isolation valve and redirected by a diver or ROV, to locally operate the valve. The balance line has a piston that is displaced with fluid pushed by the operating piston when the isolation valve is opened with hydraulic pressure in the operating control line local connection. The piston connected to the balance line moves an indicator out of its housing for the local indication that the isolation valve is open. Displaced fluid from movement of the piston in the position indicator moves a floating piston to keep seawater away from the indicating piston.

Abstract: A hydraulically operated downhole tool located at a depth where control line hydrostatic pressure would normally set the tool is temporarily isolated from hydrostatic pressure and changes thereto from well exposure or downhole operations until properly located. A removable barrier is placed in the control line to the tool at a height from the tool that limits the hydrostatic force exposed to the actuation mechanism for the tool. The preferred barrier is a rupture disc that is selectively broken with applied pressure from a remote location, typically the surface above the well. The mounting depth of the barrier can be varied to control the maximum hydrostatic pressure seen by the tool as it is advanced to the intended position.

Abstract: A cutting element for an earth-boring tool includes a substrate and volume of superabrasive material positioned on the substrate. A radial width of the first chamfer surface is between about 0.002 inch and about 0.045 inch. The volume of superabrasive material also includes a second chamfer surface having a peripheral edge and a radially innermost edge. The peripheral edge of the second chamfer surface is located adjacent the radially innermost edge of the first chamfer surface.

Abstract: A method of estimating one or both of compaction or subsidence of a subterranean formation with gravity measurements. The free air gradient at surface is measured and compared with gravity measured in a borehole that intersects the formation. At a later point in time, values for gravity are re-measured, differences between the measured values at the initial point in time, and the later point in time are estimated. The differences are used to estimate the compaction or subsidence. A gravimeter can be used for measuring gravity, markers in the formation can be used in conjunction with the gravimeter.
