    Abstract: An organic light-emitting diode display may have an array of pixels formed from a layer of thin-film circuitry. The thin-film circuitry may be formed on a glass layer that serves as an inner layer of encapsulation for the array of pixels formed from the thin-film circuitry. A thin-film encapsulation layer may overlap the array of pixels and may serve as an opposing outer layer of encapsulation for the array of pixels formed by the thin-film circuitry. An electronic device may have opposing front and rear faces. The display may be mounted in a housing on the front face. The housing may have a planar rear wall on the rear face. A display cover layer associated with the display may overlap the pixel array. A touch sensor and optical layers such as a circular polarizer layer and a compensation layer may be interposed between the display cover layer and the thin-film.

    Abstract: An electronic device housing may have upper and lower portions that are attached with a hinge. At least one portion of the housing may have a rear planar surface and peripheral sidewalls having edges. A display module may be mounted in the housing. The display module may have glass layers such as a color filter glass layer and a thin-film transistor substrate. The color filter glass layer may serve as the outermost glass layer in the display module. The edges of the display module may be aligned with the edges of the peripheral housing sidewalls to create the appearance of a borderless display for the electronic device. The display module may be provided with an opening that allows a camera or other electronic components to receive light. Traces may be provided on the underside of the thin-film transistor substrate to serve as signal paths for the electrical components.

    Abstract: A display may have a pixel array such as a liquid crystal pixel array. The pixel array may be illuminated with backlight illumination from a backlight unit. The backlight unit may include a printed circuit board, a plurality of light-emitting diodes mounted on the printed circuit board, at least one light spreading layer formed over the printed circuit board that spreads light received from the plurality of light-emitting diodes, a partially reflective layer formed over the at least one light spreading layer, a color conversion layer formed over the partially reflective layer, a collimating layer formed over the color conversion layer, a brightness enhancement film formed over the collimating layer, and a diffuser formed over the brightness enhancement film. The at least one light spreading layer may include two light spreading layers with elongated protrusions that are rotated relative to each other.

    Abstract: An array of pixels in a display may be illuminated by a backlight having an array of light-emitting diodes in an array of respective cells. A reflector is used to reflect light from the light-emitting diodes through the array of pixels. Within the cells, the reflector has cross-sectional profiles that help distribute light emitted from the light-emitting diodes toward edges of the cells. A light diffuser layer for the backlight may have a partially reflective layer such as a thin-film interference filter with an angularly dependent transmission. Within each cell, the reflector may have cross-sectional profiles with portions that are parabolic or elliptical.

    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display. Backlight structures may be used to provide backlight for the display. The backlight structures may include a light guide plate. The light guide plate may include a planar extended portion that guides light along the back of the display and an integrated edge reflector along one or more edges of the planar extended portion. The planar extended portion and the integrated edge reflector may be formed from respective first and second shots of material. The integrated edge reflector may be formed from a polymer material with embedded reflective structures such as glass microbeads or other oxide particles. The backlight structures may include a reflective layer that is attached to the integrated edge reflector of the light guide plate using adhesive. The display may include active display pixels formed over a portion of the integrated edge reflector.
