An area specifying unit 104 calculates a predictive error by substituting the detected mixture ratio into the relational expressions, and determines whether an area to which the designated pixel belongs is a covered background area, an uncovered background area, a foreground area, or a background area. The present invention is applicable to an image processing apparatus.
