Abstract: An image forming apparatus in which a visible image is transferred to a transfer material includes a pre-transfer exposing unit that makes only a portion of a latent image carrier that corresponds to a leading edge of the transfer material expose, and a transfer-bias applying unit that applies a bias for transferring the visible image. Abstract: An image forming apparatus including a cleaning device for removing toner, paper dust and other impurities left on an image carrier after image transfer with a cleaning member is disclosed. The cleaning member contacts the surface of the image carrier with variable pressure and remains, about the time when the image carrier stops moving after image formation, in contact with the surface with pressure lower than pressure capable of scrapping off the impurities. Before movement for image formation, the image carrier is driven in a reverse direction opposite to a forward direction assigned to image formation, stopped, and again moved in the forward direction and then in the reverse direction at least one time.

Abstract: A transfer separator comprises a transfer belt or other transfer mechanism for carrying and conveying a sheet to apply a toner image from an image carrier onto the sheet and separating the sheet from the image carrier. A bias application electrode applies a transfer bias to the transfer belt, wherein a relation of Lp.gtoreq.aV, and a=1 mm/KV is established when the minimum distance between the image carrier and surface of the bias application electrode is set to Lp (mm) and the maximum voltage applied to the bias application electrode is set to V (KV) . Preferably, the bias application electrode has a coated layer, and the difference in thickness resistance between the coated layer and the transfer belt is within two orders of magnitude. The hardness of the coated layer is preferably equal to or greater than the hardness of the transfer belt.

Abstract: An image transferring device incorporated in an image forming apparatus and capable of surely preventing a sheet from wrapping around a photoconductive element and from being incompletely separated from a transfer belt. A transfer bias and discharge are effected to prevent changes in the resistances of the transfer belt and sheet ascribable to changes in environment from translating into changes in a current to flow to the photoconductive element, and to efficiently dissipate a charge deposited on the belt. Various members constituting the device are positioned relative to one another such that the discharging effect is achievable most effectively while preventing the transfer bias from causing dielectric breakdown in any constituent part. For example, if a discharge member is spaced from a transfer electrode by L.sub.3 and if the transfer electrode is spaced from a nip portion between the transfer belt and image bearing member by a distance L.sub.2, than L.sub.3 .gtoreq.L.sub.2. Additionally, if the vokage applied to the transfer electrode is V.sub.O, than L.sub.2 .gtoreq.a.vertline.V.sub.O .vertline., where a is 1.0 (mm/kv); if a distance between the nip and an upstream roller entraining the belt is L.sub.1, than L.sub.1 .gtoreq.a.vertline.V.sub.O .vertline.; and if the distance between to discharge members is L.sub.4, the transfer belt has a time constant of .tau., and a process speed is .nu., than .tau..ltoreq.L.sub.4 /.nu.. Finally, the transfer belt has a double layer structure made up of an outer layer having a surface resistivity of 1.times.10.sup.9 to 1.times.10.sup.12 .OMEGA. and an inner layer having a surface resisitivity of 8.times.10.sup.6 to 8.times.10.sup.8 .OMEGA. and a volume resisitivty of 5.times.10.sup.8 to 5.times.10.sup.10 .OMEGA.cm.

Abstract: Barium sulfate having a specific crystal structure and optical characteristics is disclosed. The crystals have a plate-like structure of which the aspect ratio is 5-100 and the ratio of the square of the circumference of the plate and the area of the orthogonal projection plane is 20:1-150:1. In a preferred embodiment, a thin film of 25 .mu.m thickness with 20% by weight of the barium sulfate powder concentration has a scattering transmittance of 70% or greater and a total transmittance of 85% or greater. The cosmetic compositions to which the barium sulfate is incorporated exhibits excellent extendibility and adhesion to the skin and can effectively hide the spots or freckles on the skin. The cosmetic composition satisfies both the fine naked skin feeling and the skin covering effect, which have never been satisfied by conventional cosmetic compositions.
