Abstract:
A method of treating obesity and obesity-related disorders in a mammal is provided. The method comprises the step of administering to the mammal a compound that inhibits the synthesis or activity of peripheral serotonin, including a Tph1 inhibitor or a serotonin receptor inhibitor.
Abstract:
A new magnetic carbon nanotube (mCNT) biosensor ink (mbio-ink) that utilizes immobilized capture agents to detect specific target analytes via a simple current response method is presented here, expanding the applications of magnetic carbon nanotubes as biomolecule-sensing nanomaterials. The employment of a magnetic field to print the mbio-ink into electrically conductive networks facilitates its integration with an external circuit via the use of a simple electrode system. When the sensor is connected to an external power source, the reduction in current, caused by an interaction between the capture agents and target analyte, is detected. The rapid detection technique and generic benchtop fabrication method allows for scale up, while the small volumes required and magnet independent electrical measurements renders the mbio-ink attractive for drug screening and disease detection applications.
Abstract:
The present application is directed to methods and systems for identifying small molecule compounds in mixtures using a library comprising calculated structures and corresponding calculated mass spectral fragmentation patterns of known and/or hypothetical small molecule compounds that may be in the mixture and screening of a mass spectrum of the mixture using the library to identify matching fragmentation patterns. If a mass spectral fragmentation pattern present in the mass spectrum of the mixture matches a calculated fragmentation pattern of one of the known or hypothetical compounds this confirms the identity of a compound in the mixture as the known or hypothetical compound. The method represents a platform method that can be used for a multitude of purposes related to the screening and identification of compounds in mixtures. Therefore the methods and systems of the present application represent an approach that is uniquely capable of navigating chemical space and providing a understanding of desired families and pharmacophores.
Abstract:
The integration of the auxiliary power module (APM) functionality into non-dissipative balancing hardware of a high voltage battery or supercapacitor pack enables a more cost-effective non-dissipative balancing system while maintaining a similar complexity in topologies. The system uses state-space equations and three control problems to balance high-voltage energy storage elements and charge low voltage energy storage elements. Two optimization based controllers are employed to optimize both balancing and charging simultaneously.
Abstract:
Described are methods and compositions for treating cancer that include a dopamine receptor (DR) antagonist such as thioridazine and a chemotherapeutic agent. Optionally, the chemotherapeutic agent is a DNA synthesis inhibitor such as cytarabine or a microtubule inhibitor such as paclitaxel or docetaxel. The methods and compositions are useful for the treatment of cancers such as acute myeloid leukemia.
Abstract:
A method of producing synthesis gas includes directing a first flow of hot synthesis gas through a first conduit, and directing a second flow of feed gas through at least one second conduit. The second conduit contains a reforming catalyst. The feed gas includes a mixture of steam and a hydrocarbon gas. The second conduit has an outer surface in contact with the hot synthesis gas. Heat from the hot synthesis gas is transferred across the second conduit to the feed gas thereby heating the feed gas and cooling the hot synthesis gas. The heated feed gas contacts the reforming catalyst and undergoes a reforming reaction that produces a third flow of synthesis gas.
Abstract:
Methods for diagnosing or monitoring endometriosis in a mammal are provided. The methods include the steps of determining the expression levels of BDNF and its receptor, Ntrk2, in a biological sample from the mammal, and determining that the mammal has endometriosis when the BDNF and Ntrk2 expression levels in the sample are elevated.
Abstract:
Various embodiments are described herein for a dual-voltage charging system for electrified vehicles. In one example embodiment, the dual-voltage charging system comprises an integrated active filter auxiliary power module (AFAPM) that applies the integrated AFAPM as an active power filter (APF) to compensate the low frequency harmonics in the high voltage (HV) battery charger when the HV battery is charging, and applies the integrated AFAPM as a low voltage (LV) battery charger auxiliary power module (APM) when the HV battery stops charging and starts to charge the LV battery.
