    Abstract: A data communication apparatus includes a transmitter to transmit an initial identification signal prior to a data communication in order to set a communication procedure for this communication; a detector to detect a significant signal from an apparatus on the distant side; an arrangement for changing a transmission timing of an initial identification signal in accordance with a detection output of the detector; and a controller to set the reception mode into the polling reception mode or the ordinary manual reception mode by checking the presence or absence of the significant signal. With this apparatus, the polling reception can be completely executed for a short preparation interval without collision of the mutual initial identification signals.
