A loading station (36), preheat wash station (46), rinse station (48), coating station (38), post heat drip station (50) and unloading station (44) are peripherally spaced around the hub such that rotation of the hub moves the arms between the stations for respective functions.

    Abstract: There is disclosed an article treating apparatus particularly apparatus for pressure-impregnating or vacuum impregnating porous articles such as metal castings. A holder for the articles or a metal basket containing them is disposed in an autoclave and can be rotated about a horizontal axis. It has a horizontal through-passageway so that articles to be treated can be simultaneously loaded at one end of the passageway and unloaded at the other end of the passageway by an indexing mechanism. The indexing mechanism has a plurality of pusher arms which can be moved laterally into the path of the articles and then moved horizontally to push the articles along rails into and out of the passageway. The holder is stopped at a predetermined rotary position in which a longitudinal slot is opposite the pusher arms so that unloading and loading may be effected simultaneously with a single movement of the indexing mechanism, a pusher arm passing completely through the slot. The lower part of the pressure vessel contains liquid impregnant and the holder can be rocked between an upper loading and unloading (and spin) position and a lower immersed position.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process and to an apparatus for producing alternate monomolecular layers. In per se known manner, a substrate is passed through the surface of a liquid contained in a vessel and over which has previously been spread a monomolecular layer of a given substance. According to the invention, the vessel is subdivided into two compartments. A monomolecular layer is deposited on the surface of the liquid contained in each of the compartments. The latter are arranged in such a way that there can be no contact between the monomolecular layers in each of them and the substrate is alternately moved between the compartments.

    Abstract: Apparatus for applying film coatings of material to electrical component bodies having axial leads includes adhesive tape for supporting the components in spaced relationship. A supply reel carries a supported plurality of such components. A shaft has a circumferential row of transversely oriented pockets for receiving component bodies whereby their leads are parallel. The shaft is oriented with respect to a lower reservoir providing liquid polyurethane, so that, as it rotates, sequential pockets pass through the liquid material, retaining menisci thereof therewithin. As the component bodies are received by the menisci retained pockets, underside portions of the components are coated with liquid material. A brush applies liquid material from a upper reservoir to upper portions of the carried bodies. The brush smooths the upper portions to avoid formation of globs or blobs thereon. A pair of thick tapes, provided by reels, are coupled to the axial leads whose associated bodies have been coated and applied with liquid material. A take up reel carries the supported electrical components whose bodies have been coated together with a pair of thick tapes. A motor drives a take up reel. The tapes are of sufficient thickness that components on each wrap on the take up reel are physically separated from each other. The material can be polyurethane. The pockets can be hemispherical or hemicylindrical in shape. Adhesive tape can consist essentially of polypropylene.

    Abstract: The invention comprises a method for providing a coating to objects such as a lens. A bath of coating solution is provided and the objects are immersed into the solution and removed from the solution at a constantly changing speed. The speed of removal is slower at the top and bottom of the object and faster at the midpoint of the object. Thus the coating is thinner at the top and bottom and thicker at the center (where greater abrasion resistence is required). The slower speed at the removal of the bottom edge of the lens from the solution provides a thin coating and eliminates the formation of coating drip lines and puddles.

    Abstract: A coating applicator for applying a layer of coating material around the circumference of a portion of an elongated shaft, such as a bolt. The applicator includes a chamber which is filled with coating material and has an opening for receiving the elongated member. The opening in the chamber has a cross-sectional dimension just slightly larger than the elongated member. A cover arranged within the chamber in sealing contact with the opening prevents leakage of coating material. This cover is retractable upon insertion of the elongated member into the chamber. Coating material then totally surrounds and coats the entire circumference of a limited longitudinal portion of the elongated member. The coated elongated member is subsequently removed from the chamber. As the elongated member is removed, the inner walls of the chamber which define the opening serve to remove excess coating material from the member and to smooth the layer of coating material.

    Abstract: A method of and apparatus for applying a synthetic resin coating of predetermined thickness to various articles of different sizes and shapes from a relatively rapidly deteriorating solution of the resin in which an intermittently driven conveyor housed in a controlled atmosphere and suspending different article groups of like articles at spaced locations along the conveyor successively moves the articles from a loading station first to a cleaning station at which the articles are subjected to the action of an ultrasonic cleaner, then to a destaticizing station, then to a coating station at which a dip tank is rapidly raised to immerse the articles in the solution and is lowered at a controlled rate to provide a coating of the required thickness in a single operation, and finally through a precuring zone in which the coating dries tack-free to the loading station at which the coated precured articles can be removed. The coating solution is continuously circulated through the dip tank in such a way that the tank is always brim full and through a filter and chiller which maintains the solution below a predetermined temperature.
