Abstract: A control system and method identify a first vehicle system that is traveling from a first location toward a different, second location, and a second vehicle system for combining with the first vehicle system into a convoy of vehicle systems. The system and method also direct the first and second vehicle systems to couple with each other for travel as the convoy. The system and method direct one or more of the second vehicle system of the convoy to separate from the convoy and/or a third vehicle system that is outside of the convoy to join the convoy by coupling with one or more of the first vehicle system or the second vehicle system in the convoy in at least one intermediate location between the first location and the second location.

Abstract: A system that can automatically control the emissions of each locomotive in a consist to reduce overall train emissions. An emissions module determines the amount of emissions emitted by a train. An emissions control module commands the locomotive, via the train control system, to operate in a predetermined state to achieve a particular amount of emissions. A location module can track the location of the locomotive of the train relative geographic locations having emission regulations so that the emissions control module can command appropriate changes in the locomotive to reduce emissions.

In order to provide a generic rail vehicle in which a high level of safety can be achieved with little outlay on wiring, the vehicle unit includes a guide system interface device having a first interface unit associated with the data bus structure, at least one second interface unit associated with the line set, and a control unit which, in at least one operating mode, is provided for handling the processes through the second interface unit.

Abstract: A positioning guidance system and method based on guide rails, comprising: a host computer; a guide rail band; a plurality of beacons arranged along the guide rail band; and a receiver array fixedly mounted on a target to be positioned and guided, wherein: the host computer is connected to the guide rail band and the beacons; the beacons are connected to the receiver array; the host computer transmits movement requirements and a list and sequence of beacons to be passed to the receiver array through the beacons; the guide rail band transmits a positioning guidance signal to the receiver array; and the receiver array determines a relative position of the target to be positioned and guided by taking the guide rail band as reference, according to a projection of the guide rail band on the receiver array.

Abstract: A railway safety critical application system substitutes commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and/or software for railway-domain specific product components, yet is validated to conform to railway safety critical system failure-free standards. The safety critical system uses a pair of tasks executed on a controller of a COTS personal computer or within a virtual environment with asymmetric communications capability. Both tasks receive and verify safety critical systems input message data and security code integrity and separately generate output data responsive to the input message. The first task has sole capability to send complete safety critical system output messages, but only the second task has the capability of generating the output security code. A failure of any of systems hardware, software or processing capability results failure to transmit a safety critical system output message or an output message that cannot be verified by other safety critical systems.

The plural sensors may include a visual imager, an infrared imager, a radar, a doppler radar, a laser sensor, a laser ranging device, an acoustic sensor, and/or an acoustic ranging device. Data from the plural sensors is geo-tagged and time tagged. Some embodiments of the train control employ track monitors, switch monitors and/or wayside monitors, and some employ locating devices such as GPS and inertial devices.
