Abstract:
A computing device having an improved enclosure arrangement is disclosed. One aspect of the enclosure pertains to enclosure parts that are structurally bonded together to form a singular composite structure. In one embodiment, structural glue is used to bond at least two unique parts together. Another aspect of the enclosure pertains to enclosure parts that are electrically bonded together to form a singular integrated conductive member. In one embodiment, conductive paste is used to bond at least two unique parts together. The improved enclosure is particularly useful in portable computing devices such as laptop computers.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for processing information in a data processing system which is coupled to an information storage device having information stored therein. The method includes defining on a first processor a first search request which includes at least one parameter which specifies a first desired type of information, then performing a first search using the first request to determine whether the first type of desired information is stored in the information storage device. While performing the first search the first processor executes another process associated with searching for information in the data processing system. This other process typically includes defining a further search request and performing a further search using the further search request while the first search is being performed. The apparatus of the present invention includes a first processor coupled to the information storage device and a second processor coupled to a network to the first processor. An input device is coupled to the first processor which is used to define a first search request. According to another aspect of the invention, a first search request may be defined and the performance of the first search request may be scheduled such that a first search may be performed at a first scheduled search time or a report of the first search may be retrieved at a first scheduled time. A report in summary format is generated following performance of the first search at the first scheduled search time.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for simultaneously encrypting and compressing data identifies an encryption key and uses the encryption key to identify one compression algorithm from a set of compression algorithms. The data is then compressed according to the one compression algorithm.
Abstract:
A method for controlling a screen display of an electronic book. The contents of the book are displayed on a screen of the computer system as pages with which the user interacts by a pointer such as a pen or stylus. The content engine performs various functions including one or more of the following: (1) creating page displays for content of the book, (2) providing a navigation interface for identifying material in the book and moving to desired locations, (3) finding character strings located within the book, and (4) accepting handwritten information on pages of the book. The electronic book includes a "bookmark" button which when selected displays a bookmark icon and inserts a bookmark in the book at the page that is currently displayed. Thereafter the user can close the book or move to another page and automatically return to the marked page by selecting the bookmark icon. The user can also move to other pages by scrolling with scroll keys or other navigational devices such as tables of contents browsers and menu pages which are provided on the computer system.
Abstract:
A method and system for maintaining coherent image relationships within identified image groups in a memory system of a digital image capture device includes storing a plurality of groups of related images on a removable storage device in a hierarchical manner, and providing an alias identifier for an image file when the removable storage device has reached its storage capacity, wherein the alias identifier identifies the image file stored in a storage device of the digital image capture device. The method and system further includes providing the image file with a same file name and a substitute extension designation to correlate the image file on the storage device with an empty file of the same name on the removable storage device.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatuses for processing media data for transmission in a data communication medium. A set of data indicates how to transmit a time related sequence of media data according to a transmission protocol. The set of data, includes a time related sequence of data which is associated with the time related sequence of media data. The set of data may be utilized by a digital processing system to transmit the time related sequence of media data (e.g., by packets generated according to the transmission protocol and the set of data).
Abstract:
Enclosure panel for a mobile computer, the enclosure panel including a panel housing coupled to a portion of the mobile computer. The enclosure panel can have cosmetic or functional attributes or both. To achieve cosmetic individuality, the enclosure panel housing is made of a durable substance like transparent or colorful plastic or stainless steel, or is covered by a textile, vinyl, leather, or elastomeric material. Functional attributes include enclosure panels with pouches for storage, additional electronic component configurability, a solar power source, or a transporting means. The enclosure panel housing is interchangeable with other enclosure panel housings, providing the user with reconfigurability of a mobile computer design.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for automatically switching the resolution of an image stored in a memory when the memory can no longer store another image with the present resolution. A processor first determines the amount of available memory in the memory for storing image data. The resolution is then automatically switched from a high resolution to a low resolution when available memory is above a first predetermined level and below a second predetermined level.
Abstract:
Electronic paper which has two sides, reverse of one another, which can be flipped over in response to user generated flip commands is described. When a piece of electronic paper is flipped over, a number of transition views of the paper are generated to give the user the impression that the paper is actually being turned over to reveal a reverse side. Different information can be stored on either side, and the composition of either side can be linked so that changes made to the graphic information on one side affects the graphic information on the other side. In addition, when the amount of graphic information on the reverse side of the paper exceeds the amount of available space normally available on the reverse side when the paper is flipped over, approximately the same amount of space available on the top side, the reverse side is expanded to fit the quantity of information to be displayed on the reverse side. If the reverse side has been expanded, and the user instructs the page to flip back to the top side, the reverse side shrinks back to its original size and then flips back to the top side.
