A secondary exhaust manifold is fluidly coupled to at least one of the plurality of combustion cylinders. The secondary exhaust manifold has an exhaust outlet port. A multipurpose valve has a first valve inlet port, a waste gas outlet port and a first EGR outlet port, wherein the first valve inlet port is fluidly connected to the exhaust outlet port of the secondary exhaust manifold, the waste gas outlet port is in communication with the atmosphere, and the first EGR outlet port is fluidly coupled to the first EGR inlet port of the intake manifold.

Past exhaust emission control systems fail to utilize exhaust gas recirculation during all operating parameters of an engine. The present exhaust gas recirculation system reduces the emissions emitted from an engine during all operating parameters of the engine. The engine has a cylinder, a rotatable crankshaft and a turbocharger defining a compressor section compressing a flow of intake air to a first preestablished pressure and being driven by a flow of exhaust gas having a first preestablished pressure. The exhaust gas recirculation system is comprised of a portion of the flow of exhaust gas being recirculated back to the cylinder and forming a flow of exhaust gas recirculation. The flow of exhaust gas recirculation is cooled. The flow of exhaust gas recirculation is mixed with exhaust gas and compressed to a second preestablished pressure by the positive displacement pump. The second preestablished pressure of the flow of exhaust gas recirculation is at least as great as the first preestablished pressure of the intake air. And, a quantity of the flow of exhaust gas recirculation is controlled by a mixing valve. The mixing valve has an open position in which a portion of the flow of intake air is mixed with the flow of exhaust gas recirculation and a closed position in which the flow of intake air is blocked.

The check valve allows pressure pulses in the exhaust manifold to advance exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold while preventing the back flow of air from the intake manifold to the exhaust manifold. The EGR valve assembly further includes a housing defining a chamber. The housing further defines a housing outlet and a housing inlet both which are fluid communication with the chamber. The valve assembly further includes a master valve positioned within the chamber. The master valve is positionable between a first master position and a second master position. The check valve is (1) movable between a first check position and a second check position when the master valve is positioned in the second master position, and (2) maintained in the first check position when the master valve is positioned in the first master position. A method of controlling a flow of engine exhaust in an internal combustion engine is also disclosed.

An hydraulic actuator for a spring closed poppet valve is connected to an electrically motivated valve selecting a high or a low fluid pressure source for a chamber in which a plunger reciprocates in a cylindrical body. Poppet valve closing is controlled by restricting fluid flow from the chamber to the low pressure source. Initially, closing flow is through a closing check valve and is gradually cut off by a frusto-conical end of the plunger. Closing flow is then restricted by an orifice bypassed by a snubber check valve during poppet valve opening. The closing check valve, an opening port, and a recuperation check valve open radially through the body. The closing check valve and the opening port communicate with an annular body groove connected to the electrically motivated valve. The recuperation check valve communicates with the plunger chamber beyond the plunger end and opens directly to the high pressure source when the closing kinetic energy of the actuator elements and poppet valve develops an even higher pressure due to the restricted closing flow. Some of this energy is thus recuperated for poppet valve opening.

Engine exhaust gases are allowed to advance from the engine exhaust outlet to the engine air inlet when the valve assembly is positioned in the first valve position. Air is prevented from advancing from the engine air inlet to the engine exhaust outlet when the valve assembly is positioned in the second valve position.
