Abstract: A method of controlling a fuel injection of a diesel engine for performing a plurality of fuel injections to cause a plurality of combustions inside a cylinder in one combustion cycle, is provided, which includes acquiring an oxygen concentration inside the cylinder, performing, on compression stroke, the plurality of fuel injections at substantially even injection intervals while increasing the injection intervals as the oxygen concentration decreases, and performing, after the plurality of fuel injections, another fuel injection including a larger injection amount than in the plurality of fuel injections, near a top dead center of the compression stroke.

Abstract: A method for controlling an engine includes the steps of, in response to a transient operating event, determining a first amount of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) that if provided to an intake of the engine would avoid turbocharger compressor surge in a turbocharger, determining a second amount of EGR that if provided to the intake would avoid turbocharger compressor choke in the turbocharger, and determining a third amount of EGR that if provided to the intake would avoid engine smoking, and adjusting EGR provided to the intake of the engine in accordance with the determined first, second, and third amounts.

Abstract: A product may include an engine that may have a set of cylinders with one cylinder that may deliver a first stream of exhaust gases to a first conduit and other cylinders that may deliver a second stream of exhaust gases to a second conduit. An intake system may supply the set of cylinders with a combustion air. First and second turbochargers may be provided wherein the combustion air may be charged in the intake system through first and second compressors. The first stream of exhaust gases from the one cylinder may be routed through the first turbine.

Abstract: A control system is applied to an internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine includes an electric compressor provided in an intake passage, a bypass passage which bypasses the electric compressor, a low pressure EGR passage which connects a section of the intake passage, which is positioned upstream more than the electric compressor, and an exhaust passage, and a low pressure EGR valve provided in the low pressure EGR passage. An ECU, when a predetermined pressure accumulation condition where a gas flow rate of a specific place of the intake passage has become equal to or less than a predetermined amount, is satisfied, first executes a pressure accumulation control where the bypass valve is closed and the electric compressor is activated, and then, when an opening condition is satisfied during an execution of the pressure accumulation control, opens the low pressure EGR valve and opens the bypass valve.

Abstract: A two-stage air charging system for an internal combustion engine with mixed exhaust gas recirculation includes a high pressure exhaust gas recirculation loop, a low pressure exhaust gas recirculation loop, an air throttle system, a turbo air charging system, and an electric air charging system. A method to control the system includes monitoring desired operating target commands and operating parameters. Feedback control signals are determined based upon the monitored desired operating target commands and the monitored operating parameters. The two-stage air charging system is controlled based on system control commands for each of the high pressure exhaust gas recirculation loop, the low pressure exhaust gas recirculation loop, the air throttle system, the turbo air charging system and the electric air charging system.

Abstract: A method of operating a reciprocating engine comprises recirculating exhaust gas from a first cylinder of the engine to an intake stream or air-fuel mixture of a second cylinder of the engine such that a boost pressure of the first cylinder is greater than a boost pressure of the second cylinder. An engine retrofit system and two-cycle engine employing aspects of the method are also disclosed. The present invention has been described in terms of specific embodiment(s), and it is recognized that equivalents, alternatives, and modifications, aside from those expressly stated, are possible and within the scope of the appending claims.

Abstract: Embodiments for diagnosing a humidity sensor are provided. One example method comprises, responsive to a humidity sensor test cycle, pumping air conditioning and windshield washer gas flows past a humidity sensor, and indicating humidity sensor degradation based on a response of the humidity sensor to the air conditioning and windshield washer gas flows. In this way, degradation of the humidity sensor may be indicated if the humidity sensed by the humidity sensor does not change responsive to the humidity sensor test cycle being initiated.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for determining degradation of an EGR cooler based on differential pressure across the EGR cooler during EGR flow. In one example, the differential pressure across the EGR cooler may be based on differential pressure across an EGR valve and a pressure downstream from the EGR valve with and without EGR flow. The pressure downstream from the EGR valve may be a compressor inlet pressure or an intake manifold pressure in a low pressure EGR system or high pressure EGR system, respectively.
