Effect pigment pastes include at least one effect pigment; at least one aqueous monomodal primary dispersion which is pseudoplastic after neutralization and has a solids content of from 15 to 40% by weight, comprising as disperse phase particles with an average size of from 10 to 500 nm which are composed of a hydrophobic core and hydrophilic shell, said particles being constructed of at least one (meth)acrylate copolymer having a glass transition temperature of from 30 to 100° C. and an acid number of from 10 to 50 mg KOH/g; at least one organic amine and/or ammonia; nonionic surfactant; and organic solvent, process for preparing the pigment paste, and their use for preparing pigmented mixtures, especially aqueous and nonaqueous coating materials.

The present invention relates to a process for producing single-coat or multicoat clearcoat finishes on primed or unprimed substrates by applying at least one powder coating dispersion, in particular a powder clearcoat slurry, to the substrate and then curing the resulting film(s) thermally and/or with actinic radiation, in which at least one polyvalent inorganic acid and/or oxalic acid are or is added to at least one powder coating dispersion, in particular to a powder clearcoat slurry.

The invention relates to a process for applying a multicoat finish to a substrate surface, comprising the following steps: (1): applying an aqueous basecoat A to the substrate surface, (2): forming a polymer film from the aqueous basecoat A applied in stage (1), (3): applying an aqueous transparent topcoat B to the basecoat film obtained in stage (2), and finally (4); baking the basecoat film and the topcoat film together, wherein the basecoat A comprises at least one hydroxyl-containing binder in aqueous solution or dispersion and a stable aqueous dispersion, prepared with a hydroxyl-containing emulsifier, of a hydrophobicized amino resin, and to substrates coated in accordance with the process of the invention.

A process is claimed for producing a multilayer coating on a substrate surface, in which(A) an aqueous coating composition comprising as film-forming agent an aqueous polymer dispersion is applied as basecoat composition to a substrate surface coated with a customary primer surfacer,(B) a suitable transparent topcoat composition is applied to the basecoat thus obtained, and(C) the basecoat is baked together with the topcoat,wherein the basecoat composition comprises an aqueous polymer dispersion comprising(i) an acrylate polymer based on from 30 to 60% by weight of C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl (meth)acrylate monomers, from 30 to 60% by weight of vinyl-aromatic monomers and from 0.5 to 10% by weight of (meth)acrylic acid, and(ii) a thickener, which does not have an associative action, comprising an acrylate copolymer based on (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)-alkyl (meth)acrylate and (meth)acrylic acid.
