The vertebral rod may include one or more notches. The notches change the cross section shape of the rod and thus the structural characteristics. The notches may be shaped, sized, and positioned to facilitate vertebral movement in the first and second planes, and prevent or inhibit movement in the third plane. A fill material may be positioned within the notches to strengthen the rod and/or provide durability.

    摘要: A multiple-ratio transmission with planetary gearing and a friction clutch and brake for controlling relative motion of the gearing to establish multiple driving ratios between an internal combustion engine and vehicle traction wheels, the clutch and brake include a forward drive clutch and a reverse drive clutch for establishing torque flow paths through the gearing. The forward drive clutch establishes a torque flow path through the gearing from the engine through a torque output element of the transmission during vehicle startup in forward drive range, and the reverse clutch establishes a corresponding torque flow path during startup in reverse. A mechanical connection between the torque input shaft of the gearing and the crankshaft is characterized by minimal rotating mass, thereby reducing the inertia of rotating mass of the elements of the transmission.

    摘要: A web-tracking control apparatus including a mechanism for monitoring the cross-track force exerted on a moving flexible web as the web is transported along a desired travel path, and a control circuit utilizing the monitored force to provide for feedback control to correct tracking of the moving web. The web-tracking control apparatus for controlling the movement of a flexible web traveling about an adjustable support member includes at least one web edge contacting member contacting a marginal edge of the flexible web. A pivot assembly is operatively associated with the web edge contacting member while said web edge contacting member is in contact with a marginal edge of said flexible web. The pivot assembly is capable of deflecting a predetermined amount proportional to the force of the flexible web on the edge contacting member. A cross-track force monitoring mechanism is operatively associated with the pivot assembly for producing a signal representative of deflection of the pivot assembly. An electronic circuit responsive to the pivot assembly deflection signal provides a correction signal for causing adjustment of the position of the web support member so that the web support supports the flexible web for movement without any substantially cross-track force being exerted on the web edge contacting member.

    摘要: A powertrain assembly for an automotive vehicle having an interanal combustion engine and transmission gearing for delivering engine torque to traction wheels of a vehicle. An electric induction motor is situated in the torque flow path between the engine and the transmission. The induction motor complements engine torque which permits the engine to be turned off when the vehicle is at rest, thereby improving fuel economy and rendering undesirable exhaust gas emissions from the internal combustion engine. The torque multiplication that would normally be available from a hydrokinetic torque converter in the transmission is essentially replaced with auxiliary launch torque supplied by the induction motor during vehicle startup. The vibration damping function of a hydrokinetic torque converter during engine idle is also performed by the induction motor. Therefore, a hydrokinetic torque converter in the transmission in not necessary. The induction motor, during those operating modes of the vehicle when induction motor torque is not required to deliver driving torque, functions as an alternator during periods of regenerative braking with the internal combustion engine inactive and with the vehicle in a coast mode.

    摘要: An apparatus and method for driving a ramped drive assembly longitudinally, to drive a penetrator transversely, to cause the penetrator to penetrate and withdraw from a downhole tubular element. An anchor holds the tubing punch assembly in place in the downhole tubular element. A double piston assembly drives the drive assembly hydraulically in the downhole direction, thereby driving the ramp downhole, to force the penetrator outwardly to penetrate the tubular element. Thereafter, pulling uphole on the work string shears a shear sleeve, separating the housing of the tubing punch assembly from the work string. Further pulling on the work string partially withdraws the ramped drive assembly from the tubing punch assembly, thereby withdrawing the penetrator into the tubing punch assembly.

    摘要: A shear resisting member of a frame structure comprising four triangular cross-section beams, each beam or stud formed from a single piece of cold formed sheet steel which is bent lengthwise along four parallel lines to form a triangular cross-section with two wings or flanges, side-by-side, extending from its apex. Within the frame structure of the shear resisting member, two frame beams have first beam lengths corresponding to the longer dimension of the opening in the wall to be reinforced, which are disposed parallel to each other. The other two beams have second beam lengths substantially shorter than the first beam lengths, the second beam length corresponding to the spacing between the frame studs or truss members of the structure being reinforced. Gussets are attached along the lengths of the wings or flanges of the second beams and the ends of the first beams to fasten the frame structure together. A plurality of strut members span the interior edges of the first beams to form an open web between the two first beams. The strut members, each formed from sheet steel folded or creased to form triangular cross-sections, are fastened to the first beams at angles to provide shear resistance in a plurality of different directions. A method for retrofitting existing structures to provide reinforcement against shear forces comprises identification of weight-bearing walls and removal of interior wall paneling, such as dry wall, to expose the frame along sections of the wall. A shear panel is selected to have horizontal dimensions to fit between two adjacent wall studs, and vertical dimensions to extend from the foundation or floor joist to the roof truss or floor joist of an upper story for multi-level structures. The original wall studs are removed and the panel is inserted along with replacement wall studs.

    摘要: A material handling system is provided having particular application in grey iron foundries. In general, the system provides a continuous flow of work from the time castings are removed from their molds until the castings are ready for shipping. In particular, the system includes an environmentally acceptable grinding room work station in the form of a totally enclosed work area. Means for feeding material into and from the work station include a first plurality of gravity feed input chutes operatively coupled to a conveyor system on the input side of the work station, and a second plurality of gravity feed output chutes leading to another area on the output side of the work station. The conveyor system is designed to carry the castings from shake-out to the enclosed work area. Scrap is separated from the molded parts prior to their entrance into the work area and rejected parts continue along past the gravity feed input chutes to an accumulation storage device.
