The present invention includes a biopsy needle for use in a biopsy gun or as surgical instrument, capable of taking multiple samples, and a guiding needle holder for holding a biopsy needle. The biopsy needle includes an inner needle, also called a stylet, and an outer needle, also called a cannula, and a guiding needle holder. The stylet has a recess in the vicinity of its distal end which receives the tissue sample. The guiding needle holder includes an integrated spacer, and first and second connecting elements. The first connecting element holds the proximal end of the cannula and is displaceably attached along the length of the integrated spacer. The second connecting element holds the proximal end of the stylet and is fixedly attached to the distal end of the integrated spacer. The connecting elements each have an opening that facilitates insertion of the biopsy needle into a known biopsy gun in either the cocked or uncocked position. In an alternate embodiment, the guiding needle holder includes an integrated spacer that fixedly holds the stylet, and a connecting element that displaceably holds the cannula.

An instrument for removing tissue samples from a tissue mass which automatically penetrates, severs, and removes a tissue portion for examination. The instrument is motor powered, preferably by self-contained rechargeable batteries, and employs electrically actuated stops to control the action of penetration into and retraction from the tissue mass. The tissue penetrating means and severing means includes an inner stylet which penetrates the tissue mass and a hollow outer tube or cannula which surrounds the stylet and serves to sever a sample of tissue. In a preferred form the tissue penetrating end of the stylet is notched so that when the stylet penetrates the tissue mass, a portion of the tissue relaxes in the notched area. After tissue penetration by the stylet, the cannula, having a cutting surface at its distal end, penetrates the tissue and cuts off the tissue portion residing in the notched area of the stylet. The tissue penetrating and severing means are operably connected to a motor powered rotary cam assembly by means of cam followers and the rotary motion of the cam is converted to sequential, linear motion in the tissue penetrating means and severing means, the linear motion being of substantially constant force and velocity.

The present disclosure provides a brachytherapy apparatus, system and method that delivers partial breast irradiation treatment for post-lumpectomy patients via introduction of a catheter-like device through a trocar. The apparatus may be introduced post-surgically with local anesthesia under image guidance into the previous excision site and into a cavity by a surgeon. The brachytherapy apparatus includes one or more thin-walled tubes, each of said thin-walled tubes being configured to contain one or more radioactive sources, at least one radiation source configured to deliver a prescribed dose of radiation, a whisk adjuster configured to permit adjustment of each of the one or more thin-walled tubes so that the tubes substantially conform to a size of the body cavity; and an expansion element configured to expand outwardly said one or more thin-walled tubes within the cavity so that the thin-walled tubes substantially conform to a shape and/or size of the body cavity.
