    Abstract: Lithographic fountain solutions containing a surfactant-effective quantity of at least one reaction product comprising the following reactants: (A) at least one compound of formula I R1(X)3   (I) wherein each X group is a halogen atom or one X group is a halogen atom and two X groups represent an epoxy oxygen atom, which is attached to two adjacent carbon atoms in the R1 group to form an epoxy group, and R1 is an alkanetriyl group containing from 3 to 10 carbon atoms; and (B) at least one compound having formula II R2X(AO)nY   (II) wherein R2 is a substituted or unsubstituted, saturated or unsaturated, organic group having from 1 to 36 carbon atoms; X is —O—, —S—, or NR3— where R3 is hydrogen or a C1–C18 alkyl group; each AO group is independently an ethyleneoxy, 1,2-propyleneoxy, or 1,2-butyleneoxy group, n is a number of from 0 to 200; and Y is hydrogen, or Y can be a mercapto group or an amino group or a C1–C6 alkylamino group in place of a terminal —OH group, provided that when Y is mercapto or an amino group or a C1–C6 alkylamino group, n is at least 1.

    Abstract: Products of the reaction between I) the reaction product of reactants comprising A) a linking agent of formula I R4(Y)3  (I)  wherein each Y group is a halogen atom or one Y group is a halogen atom and two Y groups represent an oxygen atom, which is attached to two adjacent carbon atoms in the R4 group to form an epoxy group, and R4 is an alkanetriyl group containing from 3 to 10 carbon atoms; and B) a compound formula II R3(EO)n(PO)m(BO)pX  (II)  wherein R3 is a substituted or unsubstituted, saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic or araliphatic oxy or thio group having from 1 to 36 carbon atoms or a secondary amino group having from 2 to 36 carbon atoms; n is a number of from 0 to 50; m is a number of from 0 to 50; p is a number of from 0 to 50; and X is hydrogen, or X can be a mercapto group or an amino group in place of a terminal —OH group, provided that when X is mercapto or amino; the sum of n, m, and p must be at least 1; and the mole ratio of A:B is from about 0.2:1 to about 5:1; and II) a reactant selected from the group consisting of an epoxy compound, an isocyanate, a phosphate compound, a sulfate compound, an organic acid, an acrylate, and methylol urea.

    Abstract: Defoamers are the products of the reaction of epichlorohydrin and compounds having the formula II R3(EO)n(PO)mOH  (II) wherein R3 is an alkyl, alkenyl or arenyl group having from 4 to 22 carbon atoms; a substituted alkyl or alkenyl group having from 4 to 22 carbon atoms wherein; n is a number from 0 to 50 and m is a number from 0 to 10; wherein the mole ratio of epichlorohydrin to (II) is from about 0.60/1 to about 2/1 are extremely efficient defoamers for aqueous surfactant systems. The defoamers are added to a surfactant in an amount sufficient to reduce or eliminate foam and have the advantage of being totally dispersible in water, are readily biodegradable, contain no organic solvents and do not affect the detergency of surfactants with which they are used because they are nonionic surfactants in themselves.

    Abstract: An autodeposition bath for coating steel and similar metals is operated initially with a low content of dissolved iron and at a high oxidizing potential. After the iron content has increased beyond a specific level, such as 1.5 g/l, the oxidizing potential is reduced. This permits continued satisfactory operation of the bath with lower rates of iron accumulation in the bath, so that the need for bath stabilization by removing dissolved iron is deferred.
