摘要: One embodiment of the cooling module is implemented as a device having a heat sink and an integrated synthetic jet actuator. The heat sink is configured to have a channel and a jet distribution system associated with the synthetic jet actuator directs fluid flow into the channel of the heat sink. In operation, the fluid flow of this embodiment of the cooling module comprises a synthetic jet stream and ambient fluid entrained into the channel by the synthetic jet stream. The fluid flowing through the channel serves to a wall of the heat sink channel.

摘要: One embodiment of the device comprises a device for thermal management. More particularly, one embodiment comprises a synthetic jet actuator (60) and a tube (61). The synthetic jet actuator (60), though not required, typically comprises a housing (47) defining an internal chamber (45) and having an orifice (46) in a wall (44) of the housing (47). The synthetic jet actuator (60) typically also comprises a flexible diaphragm (42) forming a portion of the housing (47). The tube (61) of this exemplary embodiment typically comprises a proximal end (64) and a distal end (65), the proximal end (64) being positioned adjacent to the synthetic jet actuator (60). In this embodiment, operation of the synthetic jet actuator (60) causes a synthetic jet stream (52) to form at the distal end (65) of the tube (61).

摘要: A system and method for controlling the surface and/or volume of a digital clay device is provided. One embodiment, among others, is a method comprising the following steps: determining a desired position of a skeleton structure portion residing in the digital clay device, determining a volumetric change of fluid residing in a bladder, the determined volumetric change corresponding to the determined desired position of the skeleton structure portion, opening a micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) valve so that the fluid flows through the MEMS valve thereby causing the determined volumetric change of the fluid, and adjusting a position of the skeleton structure portion corresponding to the desired position of the skeleton structure portion, the position adjustment caused by a force generated by the bladder on the skeleton structure portion when the volume of the bladder changes in response to the determined volumetric change.

摘要: In a first preferred embodiment for an improved synthetic jet actuator, the orifice shape is altered by either a flap or adjusting the housing walls. If the flap is deployed outward from the wall just above the orifice of a synthetic jet actuator, the synthetic jet flow will be vectored upward, toward the flap. Similarly, if the upper wall forming the orifice is moved outward from the jet chamber interior with respect to an opposing wall forming the orifice, the flow will also vector upward. In the second preferred embodiment of an improved synthetic jet actuator, an opening in addition to the orifice, may be formed in one or more walls of the housing. A louver is aligned with the opening in the housing and permits fluid flow in only one direction, either into the chamber or out of the chamber. When the louver permits fluid flow into the chamber, the jet actuator can operate at high speeds since fluid can enter the chamber through a greater surface area. Another preferred embodiment for an improved synthetic jet actuator comprises two concentric tubular sections normal to an outside surface of a solid body). In operation, the innermost section is connected to a vacuum device and constantly pulls fluid down its length from the ambient fluid above the outer surface. Meanwhile, the outer section ejects fluid into the ambient environment by pulses. Such an operation will cause a synthetic fluid jet to form above the constant suction synthetic jet actuator.

摘要: A keyless locking mechanism for use in a door or the like. An operator activates the system by means of a portable remote handheld controller or a remote keypad unit, which transmit coded signals to an electronically controlled, electromechanical door lock device. The electronic and electromechanical device components are configured for secure mounting within the void or hollow portions of existing door locking apparatus, such as within the hollow interior doorknob, or hollow cylindrical sleeve latch actuators, or beneath the interior rose or escutcheon plates. A sensor or receiver/antenna mounted within the outer doorknob receives and forwards the coded signals to a processor which compares them with a predetermined stored signal. If an acceptable comparison is made, the processor generates control signals for the electromechanical device, which acts solely along or about the locking axis to enable or disable the door locking assembly, according to the command initiated by the operator. When locked, the outer doorknob turns freely. When unlocked, it operates in the normal manner, to engage and move the doorlatch and or locking member. Several embodiments of the electromechanical locking device are disclosed. The coded signals include two separate signals which are transmitted in segments interleaved with one another. The first signal includes an entrance code, while the second signal provides information concerning the frequency over which the next segments will be transmitted. The processor uses the second signal information to tune the receiver. Two-way communication between the handheld controller, or keypad and the electronic lock assembly is provided. A master programming unit for programming or reprogramming the electronic lock assembly is also disclosed.

摘要: Various systems and methods are provided for power generation using buoyancy-induced vortices. In one embodiment, among others, a vortex generation system includes a nucleating obstruction; an array of vanes distributed about the nucleating obstruction, the array of vanes configured to impart an angular momentum on air drawn through the array of vanes to form a columnar vortex over the nucleating obstruction; and a set of turbine blades positioned over the nucleating obstruction, the set of turbine blades configured to extract power from the columnar vortex. In another embodiment, a method for power extraction from a buoyancy-induced vortex includes establishing a thermal plume; imparting angular momentum to boundary layer air entrained by the thermal plume to form a stationary columnar vortex; and extracting power from the stationary columnar vortex through turbine blades positioned within the stationary columnar vortex.
